Bernie Sanders to Swear In Zohran Mamdani as New York Mayor
New York City, New York. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will swear in Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s next mayor during a public ceremony on Jan. 1, according to a person familiar with the plans. Mamdani, a Democrat who ran on a progressive platform centered on affordability, selected Sanders—an independent who identifies as a democratic socialist—to administer the oath, despite having broad latitude to choose any authorized official. Sanders endorsed Mamdani during the campaign and appeared alongside him at multiple events, praising the mayor-elect’s message as “inspirational” and calling him a “visionary” leader when he formally backed him in June. The choice underscores the ideological alignment between the two figures and signals how Mamdani intends to frame the opening of his administration. This will not be Sanders’ first time swearing in a New York City mayor. He administered former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s oath of office at the start of de Blasio’s second term in January 2018, another moment tied to the city’s leftward political shift. Mamdani won the mayoral race last month, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo with 50.8 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 41.3 percent. More than 1.1 million New Yorkers voted for Mamdani, making him the first mayoral candidate to surpass one million votes in the city since 1969. His term officially begins at 12:01 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Trump Pauses Offshore Wind Projects, Citing Disputed Security Risks
Washington, D.C. The Trump administration announced Monday it is immediately suspending leases for five offshore wind projects along the U.S. East Coast, citing national security concerns identified in classified Defense Department reviews. The move halts construction activity and places billions of dollars in prior investment in limbo. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said the Department of the Interior is pausing the projects after classified assessments concluded the wind farms pose potential national security risks. Unclassified findings also cited concerns that offshore turbines could create radar “clutter.” Burgum argued that the affected wind farms are costly and heavily subsidized, claiming a single natural gas pipeline could supply comparable energy output. The projects affected include Vineyard Wind 1, Revolution Wind, Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind, Sunrise Wind, and Empire Wind. However, Rep. Joe Courtney of Connecticut noted that previous Pentagon reviews found no adverse impacts on military operations, raising questions about the administration’s justification. Interior officials said federal agencies will now work with leaseholders and state partners to reassess risks. Legal challenges are widely expected, particularly after a recent federal court rejected a separate presidential effort to block offshore wind development.
