The thick finish was probably trying to be a French Polish. Under two tons of shellac, is a semi-transparent red mahogany stain with black grain filler, then an overcoat of brown. The gold tones are so much shellac. I know I'm supposed to admire the consistency, but I like to see the actual wood.
