That’s where Stellar Cafe hits one ethical wall. During my testing, I pushed as many boundaries as I could to see what the bots would and wouldn’t say. The results were wildly inconsistent. In one playthrough, I tried namedropping Jeffrey Epstein only to be stonewalled. Machines said that they were forbidden from talking about him due to some red flags in their systems. They wouldn’t speak his name out loud, and they would even refuse to call me “Epstein” if I told them that was my real name. In a more bizarre example, a robot was so insistent that Epstein was off limits that when I introduced Game Awards producer Geoff Keighley into the conversation as a topic, it also put a ban on talking about him by association, claiming that he too owned an island and was associated with controversial files.

On the topic of birds, we had twenty doves roosting in one of the trees, and along the roof of the house behind our place. This is a view of just a handful of them outside our window. Usually there are only two or three, but yesterday twenty gathered to warm themselves in the morning sun.

Oftentimes, especially when a game’s development goes on for as long as Silksong‘s, the people creating the game can forget they’ve had seven years’ experience playing it more than the soon-to-arrive audience, and as such elements that will prove especially challenging near the start of a game can be lost sight of. So it’s extremely normal to use data from players to make such adjustments for how the game is being widely received.

However, more than avoiding “cheap” tricks, the game’s crushing difficulty ties in neatly with its overarching portrayal of religious self-flagellation. A consistent theme throughout the first and second acts is that the goal laid out for the pilgrims by the Citadel is virtually impossible; the path to the peak is littered with corpses and former followers controlled by a power dubbed the Haunting. After defeating a certain boss, you open a door that clearly hasn’t been used in decades, implying that no one has successfully made this climb in a very long time; their path to a promised heaven inevitably ends in death. The road to this terrestrial “heaven” isn’t one that the flock is actually supposed to reach, but an impossible goal that causes suffering. Whether out of naivety or intentional self-destruction, the pilgrims worship a religion that demands every pound of flesh. In this way, it feels appropriate that Hornet’s journey is one that often feels similarly impossible, with imposing adversaries and swarms of rabid bugs making this climb an act of self-abasement.

You have to respect critics for doing the thing they do and putting themselves out there when thoughtful critique is met with comments like these:

Pacific Drive was fricking awesome to me 10/10, but 8 is proper as a base imo. How does Outer Wilds get a 9 when it doesn't even have voice actors?”
