Irish drugs policy, we may lead the entire EU for preventable deaths, but let's spend considerable tax payers money taking someone who is terminally ill to court for a bit of cannabis.

Also look at the lies the Guards try to pass off as evidence!

On stop and search, they abuse the power in the extreme. There is no oversight, no accountability, records are not kept, minors are not protected

No data more up to date than 2014
145,776 in one year.
This is ~2x rate of the UK met who publish live data

Corruption, business as usual. He told the CA that the drug laws can't be changed because AGS need the powers of Stop & search.

This garbage was repeated in today's paper.

Have we completely forgotten AGS are supposed not make laws or lobby politics?

AC Kelly appointed to lead the Guards.

Will He put an end to this sort of shit, or will we still be routinely policing (at substantial taxpayer's expense )young people for tiny amounts of cannabis

It's a health lead policy, see...

Here's the Cigarette lighter the hospital my Grandfather worked for as a Dr (& smoker..) gave out one year to medical staff.

if one runs the model locally (it's an open model) it will provide answers on Tiananmen Square and on the Uighur People, it also answered on Taiwan. I ma not seeing 'Party Line' in my local instance.

Here's the Cigarette lighter a hospital group (where grandpa Worked as a Dr) gave out to their better 'customers' for christmas one year ;-)

Irish drugs policy results in thousands of cases a year like this, for what is normal, adult behaviour in Germany, Malta, Canada & much of the US.
Each case costs the taxpayer around 8k to get to court.

Under the irish 'system' of valuation, the cops decide the value & with cannabis €20 is 1gr.
January 18, 2025 at 11:16 PM
this has huge real-world consequences, since valuation very much affects sentencing.

Gardí have the legal power to assign a valuation to drugs seized.
They value cannabis, all qualities and in all forms at €20 per gr.
Each plant is valued at €800 regardless of size, maturity or gender.

This image represents a €20 seizure amount. the kind of thing the state will happily prosecute.

On the abuse of stop and search, it's really rampant and constitutes a grave miscarriage of justice, concentrated in certain communities.

It was covered in a 2014 report, covered again in a 2022 report and is current practice.

However the election arrived before it's work was concluded so they published an interim report.
Among other things it recommends repeal of section 3 of the misuse of drugs act.

in 2022 we had a joint justice committee. It's report is here.
An FOI showed up a distinct lack of co-operation between the departments of heath and Justice, as of 2025 the minister for health *still* has not read or commented on this report

here is what the future Commissioner of the Gardí was doing in policing terms back in 90's (ballyfermot echo)
January 3, 2025 at 1:53 PM
There are many thousands of these cases every year, yet Ireland now has the EU's Highest rate of drugs deaths, under the current policy " reducing harm, supporting Recovery, A health lead response 2017-2025 "

We have increased arrests, increased convictions, increased sentences & increased deaths.
January 3, 2025 at 1:39 PM
This is current Irish drugs policy in action, we lead the entire EU at preventable deaths, we have around 4X the EU average death rate.
Under current program that Harris is responsible for, we have gone from 5th worst to first.
Yet Simon seeks to ignore 2 cross party committees and a CA.
Despicable

I'm quite dyslexic so here is a Female Banded Demoiselle Damselfly from my field last summer, complete with fact ;-)

They only spend only a few weeks flying and looking splendid but the larval stage lasts about 2 years in the river/pond

wishing you a speedy recovery from Covid.

Here's Dr Hugh Byrne (FG, Racist & later a tobacco lobbyist )
He seized on dugs policy as a form of 'reputation rehabilitation.

Here he explains how America became unstuck in Vietnam, the grave dangers of the vitamin tablet & more powers for the Garda.

Chalres Haughy (FF) warned in the 1975 debate on what became the '77 act that if these powers were to be given to AGS that they would end up being abused

AC Kelly, is like many senior Gardí, is someone who's career is built upon decades of drugs policing, it has given him rapid career progression and plenty of 'steady work'

He sees drugs policy though only the lens of prohibition and he is our future Garda commissioner.

Here's me, aged about 24 Doing sound at an outdoor event in the mid 90's.
It was at the foot of Croagh Patrick.
I think my friend Johnny Curtis must have been playing in the group as that's still his Mandola Case today!

I came home and made this 'radio' to clear my head a bit.

On long wave it plays old 'news' from North Korea, on medium-wave it has FG (mainly) being very dystopian about drugs policy and the need to be 'tough on' etc
November 21, 2024 at 11:46 AM
Any changes to Irish drug law are being strongly resisted by Gardi, it underpins the power of stop and search here. A power that is very widely abused indeed.
