Found in a local antique shop, the Vintage 1970's Nishijin Sophia Super Deluxe Flash Pachinko game had silver balls to shoot and fall through little metal pegs that would guide it to holes for points. The game sits upright from the table. It has a circular game area in a rectangular wooden frame. There are areas of faded color in the circle, green then pink in the center, an orange circle on the upper right, pale green arrow shape on the left. There are two tray type areas below the game area. Maybe one for the balls, one for money. A lever on the bottom right, possibly for launching the balls.

I finally read Cloud Cuckoo Land, started Euphoria in ebook form, and Sonia and Sunny from the library.

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr is so highly touted, I had high expectations. I should have known better because my tastes don't run with the crowds. I will say that it is very well written and the breadth of research for the story is evident. It follows 5 main characters, mostly misfits in their societies, across centuries of events. If you don't like books that flit from one century to the next and back again, this is not for you. It took at least half of the book for the connections to begin to gel (for me). I did like the ending, and it was thought provoking. I give it 3.5/5 stars 🌟 Euphoria, by Lily King takes place in 1930's New Guinea. The three main characters are young anthropologists. So far, the writing is good, the characters well presented. Questions arise about back in the days of Margaret Mead and early anthropology - by inserting yourself into a remote society, do you inherently change the interactions and thereby make your research invalid? I paused Euphoria for The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny, by Kiran Desai. Her characters and stories are complicated but seem to flow together well. It's fairly long at 670 pages, so I have a ways to go, will update later...

The Boston Opera House (now the Citizens Bank Opera House) was originally designed by Thomas W Lamb, a prominent theater architect, and opened in 1928 as a movie and vaudeville theater. After years of decay, it underwent extensive renovation and reopened in 2004 primarily for theater and ballet productions. The photo is of the lobby with vaulted and arched gold gilded ceilings, painted murals, white Carrara marble pillars, and 12-foot handblown chandeliers. The area is decorated with lighted Christmas trees and garlands. There are people on the stairs and balconies.
