“So,” Davrin says one evening as Rook is hanging around in his room. He’s taken to doing that a lot after he’s done with whatever it is he does running around the Lighthouse all the time. Dealing with people’s crises and fiddling with everyone’s equipment, Davrin suspects. Davrin finds he doesn’t mind the company, and if he’s started keeping a pot of tea around just for Rook… Well, the kitchen is just around the corner. There’s no particular meaning to it, just like there’s no particular meaning to Rook staying longer if there’s a pot of tea around. It’s just a habit they’ve both formed. “So,” Rook prompts. He’s apparently content to just sit there, drinking his tea and watching Davrin carve his creatures. Davrin isn’t very good at sitting still—at not doing something—which is half of the reason the creatures keep appearing. “We’ve talked about where I’m from.” Davrin is, admittedly, very curious about Rook’s life, but Rook isn’t the most talkative person. That’s a good trait in a leader—he listens to everything and only butts in when decisions need to be made—but a pretty frustrating one in whatever it is they are. “Have you always lived in Tevinter?” He tries to keep his tone neutral, but when Rook chuckles into his mug, he wonders if he succeeded. “Looking like I do,” Rook adds, and Davrin feels his cheeks warm. “Well. Yes,” he agrees, hoping it doesn’t make him sound like a bigot. Before Rook and Taash, he’d only very rarely encountered qunari. They’re not a common sight where he grew up or anywhere he’s been with the Wardens. Given what he knows of Tevinter, ‘not common’ is an understatement. “It’s a fair question,” Rook says easily, and Davrin’s shoulders relax a little. “Raised in Minrathous, born…I don’t really know. Adopted.” Davrin blinks in surprise at that information. He’s not sure why he assumed that Rook grew up in some happy household with parents who looked like him. “We can go as slow as you need,” Davrin says. He doesn’t want to go slow, not really, but he’s made himself wait this long. Instead of seeming relieved, Rook lets out a frustrated huff. “I don’t want to go slow,” he says, a soft growl in his voice that makes Davrin want to take him up on that right away. “Not, uh, I’m not expecting—” he adds hastily, but Davrin stops him by pressing his fingers against his mouth more deliberately. “To be clear, I am very much on board with not taking it slow,” he says, pulling his hand away and bracing himself on the back of the chair to lean in. Rook’s eyes drop to his mouth, chipping a little more at his self-control. “But I said if you need, not if you want. If we start something and you need to stop—” This time Rook shuts him up, curling both hands around his cheeks and dragging him into a kiss. Davrin melts, finding himself settling into Rook’s lap before he can think to stop himself. He barely realizes he’s moving until Rook is gasping into his mouth and grabbing at his hips to pull him closer. Davrin pulls back briefly to look at him and Rook whines, eyes wide and pitiful. Davrin needs to ruin him. “Bed,” he commands, scrambling back out of Rook’s lap. “Now.” “Yes, sir,” Rook says breathlessly. The words send an unexpected shiver up Davrin’s spine and he feels himself flush. Maybe they can examine that later.
