If you were looking for an alternative to Adobe's Substance Designer, I wholeheartedly recommend Material Maker by Rodzilla; it's free and open source, but throw them some cash if you can, they deserve it!

Here are some vignettes I had painted for it - narrowing down the rendering and tone. Doing these (as well as the ensemble images) allowed me to craft a bunch of custom brushes that I now use on all my work. 🖌️
