I'm glad! I've had it stewing in my head since the HW patches so it's really nice to see everyone responding to it.

I'm big into the idea of the empire accidentally making a primal out of the trauma they caused, and also with train as metaphor for the pain caused by the forced movement of people.

OKAY I THINK I AM DONE I ACCIDENTALLY TURNED THIS CLIFFNOTES INTO A THING THAT IS NOT A CLIFFNOTES

I think Allie is dead all along here and Alphonse is alive, but at the final stop there’s a damaged Al-——-aelsar marker or entry in a log or something. And Alphonse appeals to the train to let him disembark here, and to let Allie use his ‘ticket home’.

Like in Werlyt, the lizards drop one by one as the train reaches the land where they died. Once the tempering cure hits, the guys cure Allie and Alphonse of tempering and Gaius has a bad time over the fact that he was barely managing to handle this when they were brainwashed. Now they have emotions.

Some of the lizards would be clearly dead all along, but it’s hard to tell which. They’re super tempered but chill about it. The loved ones that the rest of Team Gaius left behind to fight wars also show board, but they’re more clearly dead.

I have put less thought into how the trial series would go down but off the top of my head: The lizard children board early on in the story and rather than the child torture facility they instead were all separated as soldiers and are just now reuniting as a family.

THUS BEGINS WHAT WOULD I GUESS BE A TRIAL SERIES which would explore the relationships that Ala Mhigo, Doma and Bozja have with the people who the empire took from them and also the relationships Gaius and pals have with the people they lost via the medium of bossfights.
November 12, 2025 at 4:07 PM
In order to make the train move on and stop trying to call people to board, the WoL boards the train. Gaius and his team also board, a small enough group that the WoL is able to protect them from tempering, each claiming to be here to help but driven, secretly, by the voices of lost loved ones.
November 12, 2025 at 4:03 PM
The next time the train whistle sounds, and people stand to walk to the train, the (awake) scions work with Gaius and his group to keep people from boarding. Without passengers, the train does not leave.

This is where the WoL is called upon, to board the train without being consumed by it.

Though Raubahn worries that refusing to execute their tempered will put Ala Mhigo in conflict with the rest of the Eorzean Alliance, the force pushing hardest for execution is Ul’dah. His influence there, along with Nanamo, Pipin, and the ‘favour’ he demands from Lolorito, smooth everything over.
November 12, 2025 at 3:56 PM
People walk to their homes. Some finally collapse upon their threshold, journey done. And the still living return to whatever family remains to them and stay there, unmoving, tempered.

The normal response to the tempered is execution. It is considered. It is rejected - how can they?

(Incidentally, in my heart this would be replacing Werlyt. I’m not going to slot the characters from that into a storyline for this (yet!!!) but just assume that there are sad lizard family dynamics happening from now on)

Fearing the worst, Lyse calls on the Scions (at least the ones still awake) as well as Maxima, Gauis and their associates. They gather at the station as the train arrives, and the carriage doors open. Ala Mhigans leave the train. Men and women taken from Gyr Abania over the decades return home.
November 12, 2025 at 3:46 PM
The next incident is in Ala Mhigo. Trains there are not unheard of, but are rare since the liberation. They arrive from Ul’dah, always, carrying materials for the rebuilding, always after weeks of grinding negotiations. One arriving without prior notice is unusual enough to garner attention.

The train carries the bodies all across the star. The provincial government silences talk of a Garlean primal, of course. It is the Lemures and associates in other regions who recognise the bodies found about stations as Corvosi. They, too, first attribute it to a failed escape.
November 12, 2025 at 3:34 PM
It’s taken for a slave revolt. Every Corvosi labourer at the farms around the central station turns and leaves their station and heads for the train. The response is swift and brutal, of course. But in the aftermath, the bodies stand. They walk to the train.
November 12, 2025 at 3:29 PM
Garleans send their families away from the city to the provinces to spare them the worst of the conflict, and the Train welcomes them and takes them away, and it learns how to offer salvation.

The first incident is in Locus Amoenus.

But they also take it home. Back to its own beating heart. To Terminus Lucius, the central station of Garlemald, named for one more son who left his home and came back sick with an illness from a far off land. As the leadership conflict in Garlemald grows more bitter, the Train finds new passengers.
November 12, 2025 at 3:16 PM
The train takes its tempered, its passengers, to the ports, and from there it spreads itself. The train carries its passengers across it ad they, in turn, carry it in their hearts across the sea. They take it forth into all the places touched by the Empire.
November 12, 2025 at 3:10 PM
The whistle sounds, people go to the platform, and the world moves on. The train has taken so many in the mundane way that for some time this goes unnoticed.
November 12, 2025 at 12:46 PM
And those who were taken by the train and returned half-eaten find themselves driven to the platform by the person that they might have been, were they only whole. Mostly.

Some few find themselves called by the temptation to lose the parts of themselves that remain, and finish what was started.
November 12, 2025 at 12:43 PM
Those who have loved people taken by the train find themselves certain that they will meet their spouses, parents, children at the platform. That they will find them as they were, or just find them at all.
