“Writing is built upon failure, dozens or hundreds of flawed openings, paragraphs, images.”

“Teaching, like writing, involves rough drafts (little failures) and revisions.”

I’ve been reading a lot on intellectual risk-taking for an upcoming workshop. 🧵

Something I'm looking forward to in 2025 is completing a draft of my book on evoking curiosity in the college classroom. This week, I just signed a contract with University of Oklahoma Press's Teaching, Engaging, and Thriving in Higher Ed Series. 🧵

I feel like in 2017 I just watched Parks and Rec on repeat for this reason (not always hopeful re: the efficiency of the government but funny and boy did I need to laugh).
Considering the return of the worst president in U.S. history to the White House and the horrors to surely come, I tried to think of hopeful TV shows to counteract my mood. These are the first three which came to mind —

The Good Place
Ted Lasso
Steven Universe

What other shows would YOU suggest?

Bluesky academics, let's get to know each other! Quote this & tell me: 1) a project you are working on & 2) an odd idea/theory you aren't working on but keep thinking about. Here's mine:

1) a book for faculty on designing moments for curiosity
2) themed conferences are too constraining 😬

1) a new model for education reform
2) The Canterbury Tales is finished & complete. Yes, I really think this.

1) conversion in late antiquity
2) Passio Perpetuae = Montanist "testimonies" w/1st & 3rd person narratives added later

I came across a great intro activity from The Art of Noticing substack that I plan to use in my course on curiosity: What could you speak about, with no advance preparation, for 30 minutes? Such a great way to find out more about your students' passions and interests.

How would you answer? (1/2)

This semester has been a slog for me, both personally and professionally. So in the spirit of reflection, I’ve identified the top 5 faculty development/ed development moments that brought me surprise, renewal, play, energy, and celebration (in other words, joy).

Keep reading. (1/6)

I've been reading a book on finding joy in design and experiences. TBD on how I'll apply it to fac dev, but it did prompt me to create this nugget of joy for my office, inspired by an absurd SNL sketch of Christopher Walken, referenced in the book, about a gardener afraid of plants. (1/2)

When I used to lead New Faculty Orientation, I had faculty introduce themselves at their small tables by creating a visual representation of their research or area of teaching using art supplies. The laughing I’d hear as they spoke to each other—across disciplines and career stages. It was lovely.

Thoughtfully working on (scrambling to create) a 10-minute POD Talk to be given at this year's POD Network Conference in Pittsburgh. Looking forward to seeing so many people there!

And some deep appreciation to @sevello.bsky.social for prototyping an emergent strategy brainstorming workshop with me at the NEFDC Conference that aims to get ed developers in the "right relationship with change."

A week late and finally coming out of a head cold, but a big thanks to @lindsaymasland.bsky.social's NEFDC keynote that gave me the term “pedagogical disobedience” to describe how I've been consulting with faculty.
