The girl pauses for a moment, hesitating, but the allure of petting a chocobo wins over as she quickly nods. Cid easily lifts her to put her atop one of the chocobos, and she gasps in surprise, grasping at the saddle and her gaze awed as she stares at the large bird. Very carefully, she runs her fingers through the chocobo’s yellow feathers. “It’s so soft,” she marvels, and Cid smiles at the look on her face. Now she finally seems more like the child that she is and less like a rabbit that’s on the verge of bolting at any given moment. Cid glances away for a moment to see what Clive’s doing, and finds him standing beside the wagon and simply staring at him and the girl. When he notices Cid looking, he is quick to avert his eyes, a red flush creeping up his neck. What’s he getting embarrassed about?

He feels Barnabas’ eyes burning on his face, but he ignores it. “Far from it. We didn’t know each other for very long, but you…” How to explain it? How to give words to how Cid effortlessly burrowed under his skin and became part of him, merging with the very marrow in his bones? “You were a dear friend to me,” Clive finally settles on. Woefully inadequate, but all that he can offer. I realized it too late, Clive doesn’t say, his chest constricting with the ache of it. I realized it too late, and then all I could do was love you in death.
