BOYCOTT EAA-ATHENS 2026 🏺

This is not a BTC action but we are helping to disseminate this call, as the president of the EAA has shown great willingness for reprisals.

Please distribute widely, particularly to offline colleagues.
Poster titled BOYCOTT EAA-ATHENS, with a circle/slash crossing out the EAA 2026 Athens logo. This is an urgent call for all members of the archaeological community to join this boycott. Do not submit a session to the EAA until Eszter Banffy steps down as president of the EAA after her anti-democratic actions. There has been a concerted campaign of intimidation against individual members of the board, including large numbers of threatening and defamatory emails and individual participants, groups, and student volunteers have been intimidated. Even after close documentation of her shameful autocratic actions in the press and on social media, she refuses to step down. We cannot let this happen, this is not what we stand for as a community. Many departments and institutions already decided not to participate and submit sessions after it has become clear that the EAA has not resolved its issues. Do not submit a session until Banffy steps down. If you have already submitted a session, retract it.

Just saw a video of an archaeologist working for ASI on a contractual terms. He complained about precarious working conditions and late payment of salaries among other issues. His team has filed a case against the violation of labor laws and they're being harassed & pressured into take it back.

Ink and graphite sketch of a downcast man in a loincloth sat on a dung heap, addressed by a standing woman in medieval dress with a butterfly headdress. Text reads: Middens (known in the medieval West Midlands as ‘miskins’) are a gold mine for archaeologists, but as Victoria Bryant (medieval ceramics 32, 2011) pointed out, they’re frustratingly rare in the urban archaeological record. Why? Waste had to be actively managed and frequently removed: to prevent foul odours, believed to be vectors of disease, but also because the fetid mix of food waste, excrement, ashes and domestic rubbish was a valuable resource, fertilising the fields for miles around. The City Ordinances of 1467: ‘no donge ne corruption of howsis be put or cast upon the Town dytche... but in places ordeined and appoynted for the same’ Illustrations of middens are rare, but examples telling the biblical story of Job upon the dungheap typically show middens outside the town walls.
