Maeiou sat herself and her pho into her beanbag-chair-tablet-stand-nest, in the same motion tapping the home screen's iconless app whose sole purpose was to generate faux zen koans by way of context-free grammar—a practice that seemed like complete pointless ratshit to me until (X_X)—the name of Maeiou's unpronouncable other—explained "The Principles of Voidsight" and how "We Implemented This Before We Knew What a Koan Was." Indeed it's no ratshit to me now. After its multi-hour into-the-night impromptu seminar on the whole thing, which left myself with both the theoretical understanding and the neuronal praxis to EXPERIENCE THE VOID, I no longer receive the app's empty nonsense as empty nonsense. Now it is *emptying* nonsense, and even just catching a glimpse of its sentences from time-to-time over Maeiou's shoulder was enough to unfurl something inside me. For instance: "IMAGINE A PERSON ARRIVING BEFORE HE ARRIVES" *Guhh,* I would think—if you could call that thinking. But I shielded my eyes from (X_X)'s religious wireheading by looking at the floor and all its crumby landscapes. Tonight wasn't a night to be unfurled. What I wanted was to be twisted tight.

if you want to write unlike LLMs you'll want to write unlike the following things: - press releases - app changelogs - internal emails - all probable text here's ways you can do it: - order words of place your out - end your sentences such that they don't go where you'd expect the southwest airlines cookie tray has used toilet paper on it :( - say something aggressive and maladaptive that RLHF would never allow such as—(last twenty or so words are censored) - construct a consistent alternate reality completely causally disconnected from us, invent language to describe the new nouns, verbs, and adjectives, and then use those words and phrases in your everyday speaking

LLMs are constrained not just by what is statistically likely, but also what is economically feasible. before LLMs, text written by hired hands already had a consistent, flat tone/style, because to use a different one adds cost. the mechanization of anything, the industrialization of anything for the purposes of creating mass amounts of the thing means all variations are lost of the sake of sameness and consistency. people can injection mould a stacking chair. one plastic chair injection moulding machine can make one million chairs in 20 seconds. do you know what kind of chair you won't see a million of? an execution chair that is icarly themed. do you know why? because nobody wants that. so make it.

my answer to the mary's room problem is that mary *does* gain knowledge when seeing colour for the first time—however she might not be as surprised by it as someone who hadn't studied colour. because in her quiet moments between her studying she would sit and daydream about what it would be like to see colour. she'd vividly imagine what it might be like, what the experience would taste like. maybe at one point she began seeing "phantom colours" in the patterns of the black-and-white quilt she sleeps with. the proctors of the experiment she was in, observing from the outside, event wrote a paper about this "delusional synthesthesia." after they brought her into the real world—after her shock and awe wore off—they showed her the colour version of that quilt. she pointed at a blue square. <FIRSTLETTERLESS> she thought herself "fingers" for she could see nothing else. she'd been in here forever, in this "here" forever, this big tub where one might scrub dishes or rinse dirt from their dog. she'd never experienced either of those—no dog nor dishes—though she could see them in memory well enough, these nouns she could use on the endless flow of perception. tools to sort it out. it struck her odd how she used things she'd never seen to bring sense to the things she could. for now the things she could see were just the ceiling (lights in pretty rows), the tub (high-sided, shiny), then her fingers. her eyes were fixed to her fingers which she held (fixed, too) before the eyes. the fingers were crossed together, one set of five crossed with the other, like ribs interlocking (do they interlock?) hovering stock still. not quite completely unmoving. but every so often, once in forever, the side of one would touch the side of the other, then: *zzzt* *zzzt* *zzzt* dizzy, dizzy, down, down, then gone. --- she thought herself "fingers" for she could feel nothing else. every once in forever her fingers would touch. it would come like some bolt-from-the-blue, some explosion, the gentle sense would strike her mind which—still inexperienced, still coming together—would choke on it, like some gluttonous python, its unhinged mouth not quite fitting round its rotund prey. she'd be brought to dizziness—swirling down somewhere, somewhere where her conciousness stopped, sputtered to bits like droplets hitting tin roofs. forever would end. then nothing. just fingers, tub, then ceiling, together existing but not together perceived, not brought together—not tied together by her. for there is, in these moments when forever ends, no "her." --- then things reset. forever begins, fresh, new. --- she thought herself fingers for she couldn't yet be something else. she could see in memory why she'd been put in this tub, in this "here." she's "new." recently built. put together from polymer, wire, circuits, light fibre, sensors, etc. etc. she could see her own BOM, right there in memory. she knew it from beginning to end. but to know something requires two things: something to know plus someone to know it. but there's no "someone" yet. this comes in time. some number of forevers here. dizzy, choking, coming together. fingers interlocked. then, subtly, touching. *zzzt* *zzzt* *zzzt* then forever begins, fresh, new.

the purpose of skills are so you can better serve your friends. the desire to serve your friends is a motivation that needs to be cultivated and nurtured. who counts as a "friend" is a choice you make. it can be a broad or a narrow definition depending on context. money and capitalism are systems meant to reduce all human flourishing to their consequences—their final outcomes, their measurable results, their products. why you did something only matters in-so-far as it produces capital value. but *why* you do something matters much more than that—you have to introspect to find the feelings of fulfillment from the intention itself. "it made me money" is a thought terminating cliche. if it will never make you money, why would you do the things that you do? why do we do anything?

every AI generated pixel, every AI generated token I see makes me want to use the internet less. it makes me want to log off and spend the rest of my days reading books published before 2020. this must be how the paranoid creatives felt in the 2000s when cross-site tracking and the patriot act also pushed them offline. this must be how those creatives who refused to give up their own methods of distribution felt when things like facebook and twitter and youtube monopolized attention through the 2010s and turned the internet into a small collection of walled gardens. I don't know what kind of creative you'd call me, but I cannot abide by the internet being polluted by mushy, merely-probable junk data which is drowning out what had once been a place to find real testimony, real human effort and art whose maxim is to bridge the gap between us. sure there will always be oases, places where human creativity continues to thrive, but I'll forever miss when the entire land was covered in green.

oh we are just soo excited about claude tool use and agentic mode! we've got an amazon turk module for the LLM to use. isn't that delightfully circular? it all comes back to the basics—the intellectual in its ivory datacentre commands the rabble—a function call, just like a function call! you see a machine chooses, and a woman obeys :) amazon turk leaves you free to think of the important, interesting questions that brought you to the academic field in the first place. not the nasty yucky questions like labour relations or poverty or the simple question "why am I doing any of this?"—because you won't like the answer to that one! there was a child who LOVED PUZZLES and the child PLAYED THEIR PUZZLES all day and all night and missed out on some minor important things like the flourishing of the human soul and person-to-person connections that cross the gulf of class and ability. THAT CHILD IS YOU ☺️ YOU NEVER PUT DOWN THE PUZZLE BOOK

amazon turk is great, let's give it up for amazon turk! what a completely indispensable tool for building AI systems, for grounding them to what humans want to see! it's just a perfect system and it works like this: there is a woman in del moines who we cannot name and she has chronic pain and she is trying REALLY REALLY hard to stay alive 😊 and to stay alive she needs MONEY 😊 but she hurts soooo much that she can't do a work job like cashier or warehouse employee and even if she could she doesn't have a car so INSTEAD she WORKS ONLINE with AMAZON TURK organizing and choosing and picking and getting things all in order and on a good day she can get 10 dollars! and it's not just miss del moines there are thousands and thousands of people just like her in the mud-floor basement of AI research 🤗🤗🤗 so remember EVERY time you thank CHATGPT you are thanking the women like her! she'll never hear the thanks, but it's the thought that counts :)
