Plants are all tucked in under the snow. It's so very cold out. I want to check on how all my lettuces and roots are doing under their covers, but I don't want to expose them to the cold.

No one told me gardening would be so much about patience.

First day of breaking open the Bonne Maman jam advent calendar!! Going through it with @luketolvaj.bsky.social and @svranderson.bsky.social . We started on December 1st, but will be taking it at our own pace.

So I'm back to work today, after the disruption of the last couple weeks. Working my way through Twisted book 4, the final draft before I send it for copyediting. I come across this speech, which I wrote months ago, but I feel like it was a note written directly to myself for this moment.
Varajas gave a slight nod, encouraging him, and Ádan went on. “I don’t know what the future is going to look like. We’ve spent so much time these past few months worrying about forever that we haven’t paid enough attention to tomorrow, and the day after that. So far, there have been a number of tomorrows and we’ve been doing okay. We’re alive. We’re here. No one is banging on the door, and I’m going to count that as a win. If tomorrow the same things are true, I’m going to count that as a win as well. “Hope and belief. That’s what I choose. Even if we’re destined to fail, I’d rather face that failure knowing that I never stopped celebrating the life we have remaining.” “That’s all well and good,” Arshtar said in a voice that made it clear he did not think it all well and good, “But you can’t just pretend—” “I’m not saying anything about pretend. I’m saying this is my choice. I will not give in to despair. I will not forget that there’s still beauty and goodness in the world. That’s what we’re trying to protect. That’s what all this work is for. If we lose sight of it—even if we simply give up on the idea that these things are for us—then how are we supposed to keep fighting?”

Today is very stressful for a lot of people. I, too, am living in a state of perpetual anxiety. I wish I could say something to make it better. But all I can offer is this lovely tree.

As a treat to myself, I am doing the Bonne Maman advent calendar. Started early because I cannot go through even a tiny pot of jam a day. Excited for the surprise and new flavors!

First door was Quince. I’d never had it! Kind of a citrusy fig flavor? Delicious!
