Messing with my Torgal now too. I'm really new to FFXIV modding with Penumbra, and it is a bit of a headache, but slowly figuring things out.

Brief about how Corrupted Drives can still contain data but your computer can't normally find it (and what little I remember from Operating System Class in University)

Doodle of how a File System works. Meet Drivey the Solid State Drive! Drives are formatted with a File System to track where files are stored in binary inside the drive. The drive is essentially a gigantic never-ending list of memory addresses. Inside the drive, there is nothing to denote when one file ends and another begins. In order to organize it, the File System keeps track of which memory address a file starts at. Sometimes GIANT files can span multiple addresses and the File System + Operating System handles combining these into a single file your program like Blender reads. This is how things work under normal healthy situations. Sketch of the file system but now it's broken. Drivey is saying "I don't feel good." The File System is missing and the Data on Drive no longer has any color coordination to indicate files. When the Drive starts to fail, the File System might start having trouble reading its notes about where files and folders are stored. When the File System goes, the giant pile of memory addresses inside the drive are essentially a giant jigsaw puzzle of meaningless 0's and 1's. This is why when the drive dies, it looks like the data just disappeared. Totally gone. However! The 1's and 0's remain unchanged and are still happily sitting inside the drive. First Note: the data will be gone if those memory addresses inside the drive also die. When a drive dies it's not always just the File System that goes. Second Note. If you run a recovery on the drive or reformat it, the drive will now have a functioning File System but it'll consider the missing data (which is still on the drive) as "free and available" so it will try and write to it. If that happens then some of your data will be gone. Close up of the Binary Data but it's color coded again. Drivey is saying "Sorry. Don't know names or folders or dates." but the files are now found! So, MOST files will have a way to announce itself in binary. Usually the first section of a file will say something like "PNG" or "JPEG" or "BLEND". Recovery tools will use this (and other clever tricks) to comb through a pile of binary data and try to pull files out from the heap of data. However even these can still fail if memory inside the drive has mechanically on a hardware-level failed. Also, it's the File System that keeps track of file names and dates and folder, so tools will just spit out files without any names or folders. Also, if a file spanned multiple different addresses then that file is totally lost without a lot of advanced work. OR sometimes these tools will mistake binary data as a certain file incorrectly OR the tools won't know about obscure file formats. If you have a lot of time or an incredible need to try and recover something specific and you know roughly what kind of binary pattern to look for, you could probably do a search manually and try some manual recovery but... OOF. When recovering, you'll want to follow up the recovery effort with additional tools to help organize the dumped files.

Sometimes I like to setup a treat sampler for my dog after our walks
