This Bonds of Friendship monument outside Square Tower commemorates the First Fleet sailing to #Australia from Spithead on 13 May 1787. There is a twin monument in Sydney.

All Saints' Earls Barton is one of several #Northamptonshire churches with Saxon roots. It is renowned for its unique tower, which dates from the 10thC and overshadows other notable Norman and later features. North of the church is what looks like a motte - and it probably is.

The #Cambridge American Cemetery commemorates almost 9,000 Americans who died while based in the UK, or travelling to it, during WW2. It is the only WW2 US military cemetery in the UK. White marble headstones mark the resting place of 3,811 war dead - the missing are listed on large panels.

Aldborough #Roman Town lies largely under the charming village of Aldborough (old borough) #Yorkshire. It was Isurium Brigantum, a significant Romano-British trading town and regional administrative centre between the 2nd and 5th centuries AD.

Arbury Hall #Warwickshire is an Elizabethan manor house built on the ruins of a 12thC Augustinian Priory and transformed into the Gothic style in the 18thC. It is renowned for fan vaulted ceilings and for the fact that George Eliot, aka Mary Ann Evans, was born at South Farm on the estate in 1819.

Arthur’s Quoit (Coetan Arthur), #Pembrokeshire #Wales was, according to legend, thrown by King Arthur from nearby Carn Llidi. It is the remains of a single-chambered Neolithic burial chamber, or Dolmen, 4-6,000 years’ old; the capstone is c20’ long and now supported by just one upright stone.

Arlington Row is a piece of #Cotswolds eye candy in the lovely village of Bibury, #Gloucestershire - described by William Morris as “The most beautiful village in England”. Arlington Row was a 14thC wool store converted into weavers’ cottages in the 17thC. No 9 is available for bookings. 😀

All Souls College #Oxford was founded by Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury and Henry VI in 1438. It has no students but allows graduate fellows to undertake further studies and pray for the souls of all the faithful departed. Past fellows include Christopher Wren and TE Lawrence.

Abbotsford #Scotland #Borders was the extraordinary home of the 19thC novelist Sir Walter Scott 1771-1832. Scott's works included 'Waverley' and 'Ivanhoe'. He also popularised tartan, saved the Scottish banknote and rediscovered his country’s Crown Jewels ('the Honours of Scotland').

20 Forthlin Road, #Liverpool is Paul McCartney's former teenage home. This is where Paul and John Lennon went when they 'slagged off' from school to play guitar. Several of the Beatles' hits were written here. The house been restored with incredible attention to detail. #NationalTrust
