The NCVS provides statistics on crimes reported and not reported to police and on the reasons why a crime was not reported to police. During 2017-20, violent victimizations against persons who identified as lesbian or gay were more likely to be reported to police (58%) than violent victimizations of persons who identified as straight (45%) or bisexual (31%) (figure 2). Lesbian or gay persons chose not to report their violent victimization to police for a variety of reasons. Some of the most common reasons included considering the crime to be minor or unsuccessful, believing the crime to be a private or personal issue, not wanting to get the offender in trouble with the law, or believing police would be ineffective (not shown in figure). For persons identifying as bisexual or straight, the most common reasons for not reporting the victimization to police were because they reported it to another official or believed the crime to be a private or personal issue (not shown in figure).

Bisexual males had the highest rate (64.5 per 1,000) among male victims. The pattern was similar among female victims. Bisexual females experienced violent victimization at eight times (151.2 per 1,000) and lesbian or gay females at 2.6 times (50.3 per 1,000) the rate that straight females did (19.2 per 1,000). Among bisexual persons, the rate of violent victimization was higher for females (151.2 per 1,000) than males (64.5 per 1,000).

The rate of rape or sexual assault against persons who identified as bisexual (27.6 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 16 or older) was 18 times the rate for persons who identified as straight (1.5 per 1,000) (table 1). The rate of rape or sexual assault was also higher for lesbian or gay persons (3.1 per 1,000) than straight persons (1.5 per 1,000) During 2017–20, the rates of robbery against bisexual persons (15.7 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 16 or older) and lesbian or gay persons (6.4 per 1,000) were greater than the rate among straight persons (1.8 per 1,000). This pattern held for rates of total assault, simple assault, and violent crime excluding simple assault. The rate of aggravated assault against bisexual persons (16.4 per 1,000 persons age 16 or older) was higher than the rate among straight persons (3.4 per 1,000) Domestic violence includes violent victimizations committed by current or former intimate partners or family members. Compared to the rate of domestic violence against straight persons (4.2 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 16 or older), the rate among bisexual persons was about eight times as high (32.3 per 1,000) and the rate for lesbian or gay persons (10.3 per 1,000) was more than twice as high. The rate of intimate partner violence (domestic violence victimizations committed by current or former intimate partners only) was higher for bisexual persons (20.9 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 16 or older) than straight persons (2.5 per 1,000). For stranger violence, the rate among bisexual persons (55.0 victimizations per 1,000 persons 16 or older) and lesbian or gay persons (23.4 per 1,000) was higher than the rate among straight persons (7.6 per 1,000). This pattern also held for rates of violent crime involving an injury and violent crime involving a weapon.

During 2017–20, the victimization-to-population ratio for persons who identified as lesbian or gay was 2.2, meaning that the percentage of violent victimizations for persons who identified as lesbian or gay (3.0%) was about two times the percentage of lesbian or gay persons in the population (1.4%). (See appendix table 6.) The victimization-to-population ratio was 6.4 for bisexual persons (who accounted for 0.7% of the population and 4.7% of violent victimizations) and 0.9 for straight persons.

Based on 2017–20 population data from the NCVS, 1.4% of persons age 16 or older self-identified as being lesbian or gay and 0.7% identified as being bisexual. (See appendix table 9.) The rate of violent victimization was significantly higher among bisexual persons (129.1 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 16 or older) than lesbian or gay persons (43.5 per 1,000) or persons who identified as straight (19.0 per 1,000) during 2017–20. Persons who identified as “something else” experienced violent victimization at a higher rate (106.2 per 1,000) than lesbian or gay persons.3

After analyzing the responses and comparing those who developed long COVID to those who did not, the researchers determined that distress before COVID-19 infection, including depression, anxiety, worry, perceived stress, and loneliness, was associated with a 32%-46% increased risk of long COVID. These types of psychological distress were also associated with 15% - 51% greater risk of daily life impairment due to long COVID. "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first prospective study to show that a wide range of social and psychological factors are risk factors for long COVID and daily life impairment due to long COVID," said Andrea Roberts, senior research scientist in the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard Chan School and senior author of the JAMA Psychiatry paper. "We need to consider psychological health in addition to physical health as risk factors of long COVID-19. These results also reinforce the need to increase public awareness of the importance of mental health and to get mental health care for people who need it, including increasing the supply of mental health clinicians and improving access to care."

The majority of physicians feel unprepared to diagnose and treat long COVID, which disproportionately affects LGBTQ+ people, women and people of color. Without targeted interventions in prejudicial healthcare practices, our health care inequity crisis will only deepen. In the absence of clinical guidance, doctors often filter patient testimonies through the stories they've heard-about people of color, queer people, migrants women, and other marginalized folks-and they decide whether to trust what v say about our bodies. Most medical schools do not provide adequate training on treating trans patients. In fact, medical training that addresses the needs of vulnerable populations is rare-as is educational content that tackles implicit bias. Given all of this, it is unsurprising that long COVID is more severe in communities of color and significantly more common among transgender and bisexual people. (Clinics are also more difficult to access for these patients).

In addition to showing higher rates of long COVID in younger adult populations and women, the Census Bureau survey also revealed that trans and bisexual adults are much more likely to report having the disease. Compared to 5% of cisgender men and 9% of cisgender women, 15% of trans adults in the U.S. say they are currently experiencing long COVID symptoms. Meanwhile, 12% of bisexual adults in the U.S. are living with post-COVID conditions, compared to 7% of straight, gay, and lesbian adults. Those rates mirror broader health disparities experienced by the trans and bisexual communities - and point to disconcerting ways our healthcare systems may be failing them. A Heavier Long COVID Burden for Bi and Trans People Those health disparities may also explain why bisexual and trans people experience long COVID at higher rates than lesbians or gay men. Because of the heightened stress and stigma associated with bisexuality, bisexual people experience worse health outcomes overall than gay or lesbian people. The same goes for trans people, who often experience outright discrimination and stigma from health care providers. These inequalities can create fertile ground for chronic illness and disability, two factors that can put someone at risk for developing long COVID.

Cy is not only one of the millions of Americans with Long Covid - as a trans man, he's part of a population that is overrepresented in these millions. Less than 2% of U.S. adults are trans or nonbinary, yet nearly 24% of all transgender adults report that they have experienced Long Covid. Bisexual adults report Long Covid cases at the same percentage rate (24%). That makes trans adults and bisexual adults, along with disabled adults, the demographic groups that are experiencing Long Covid in the highest percentages in the country. But consider that bisexual adults have a higher likelihood of health issues like high cholesterol, asthma and breast cancer. Or that trans adults are more likely_than cis adults to be on Medicaid, or not have health insurance altogether. A hypothetical Long Covid response that focuses merely on physical symptoms could clearly ignore the myriad of factors that make trans and bisexual people particularly vulnerable. But a response fueled by an understanding of disability justice stands a chance - not just at treating symptoms, but ensuring that Long Covid does not render people invisible. This social isolation forced upon Long Covid patients by an ableist world is felt on another level by those who are trans and bisexual. LBGTQ+ people often must push through social stigma and navigate unsafe circumstances before they find people who accept and protect them. Trans people in particular frequently experience rejection by their biological families. Bisexual people can be stigmatized even within queer communities themselves, facing accusations that they aren't "gay enough" or are simply "experimenting" with queerness. Given all these stigmas and more, LGBTQ+ people consistently reported high levels of loneliness even before pandemic lockdowns. Social isolation isn't just a mental state: the CDC has noted that social isolation and loneliness are linked to increased risks for health conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia and earlier death. All this makes spending time in community with other trans and bisexual folks incredibly_precious. Yet even for those who have found queer acceptance, that hasn't automatically translated to acceptance of the disabled.

So what I've gathered from the many ways (and often contradictory ways) that people in my life have described and labeled me has made me feel that I'm either a really fucked up person or - according to friends and family (who will always be there to switch a negative into a positive) - I'm just simply being human (which is never a simple thing to be).

I hid from coming out as femme because I was ashamed of being fat and I thought for sure people would see a fat femme trans boy as a complete joke. Then I met a lot of fat femmes all at once. I had only been around this many other fat people once before (at fat camp when I was 15, a completely different story that I'd love to tell but for now I will just say there were a lot of positives and a lot of negatives), had never been around this many femmes, and had never ever met a fat femme trans boy in my life.

Mason: Femme very much existed in my community, but it was viewed as a necessary evil of sorts. To be gay was to be butch; to be butch was to date a femme and to be femme was to be suspect. The center of our world was our bar and a tribunal of old butches ruled that bar. Working in the paper plants and cotton mills during the day, they came at night with their femme dates...classic southern beauties with big bodies, tight pants and mile high hair. They clearly held respect and respected in turn their femmes...but we baby dyke college brats were bad news. We fought and dissed, mocked and judged, dating the femme girls but faulting their femaleness. Those dangerous bi-sexuals who would seduce a butch just to leave her for a man. Those weak girly things who didn't know what it was really like to be GAY in the south. Those desirable objects to be caught and released like prize deer. It's so nice to reflect on your own bullshit past. The laughable image of me as butch, me the swishiest tranny fag bitch imaginable. My silly fat self

jenny bruso then reflects on how hard it can be sometimes to present as femme, using the example of her flat, wide feet that make wearing heels painful, & how she wears them anyway, even for short periods, bc of the joy it brings her.
But it's not just high heels, really. With the exception of the short, twinch heels on all of my boots, I only wear little, pointy-toed and ballerina flats and my feet are still all fucked up. At this very moment, I have two blisters from a pair of shoes that I am still breaking in after more than two weeks. My muscles on my ankles are often sore, my knees sometimes hurt and I'm pretty sure the musole pain in my lower back and hips has more to do with my footwear and less to do with working in. a kitchen than I lile to let on. They simply don't make cute little shoes that are also good for your feet.

i didn't want to be femme. i was in a relationship where i internalized some femme-phobia. my x would often point out that she was attracted to others who looked boyish or androgynous. That look has never been an easy option for me, because of my ultra girly voice and body. it also isn't who i am. i could tell she was more attracted to me when i wore jeans and a t-shirt, and it wasn't a good feeling. (ironically, she recently told me she has a major hard on for mostly femmes.)

I decided my revenge would be my beauty, I distanced myself from her and from the self-doubt and hatred she was trying to pass along to me. I could go into more detail about the fucked up shit she did to try and tear me down, to prove she was in control of me when she realized she wasn't. But I'm done with it. I've learned from it. I started yelling out with my clothes. My Body. My Style. My self-love attitude. I feel this is where I connect my femme identity to just the self-fucking love. that I learned in those years where I was being taught self fucking hate.
