It seems like I'm unable to message you on here for some reason, I'm not sure how Bluesky message restrictions work lol. Do you have this set intentionally? I can also ping on your store page if you'd prefer

The treatment of Hughes' work is very reminiscent of the white-washing/de-radicalization of black intellectuals throughout history, and it's crucial to our understanding of US history to resist the watering down of their messages. Thank you for sharing!

Nice! I haven’t read the graphic novel version of that book yet. I don’t think I’ve heard of The Anomaly before

That was also the last time I read it. The language Steinbeck uses during the short interludes is cynical and straightforward, these are among my favorite parts of the book on my second read. I’d say you should give it another go!

I think our interpretations are actually quite similar. I agree that we need new systems, new approaches to combating the societal ills facing the world (as you say, cultivating new apple trees). To do that though, we must understand the powerful individuals blocking progress (e.g. the worms).

The bad actors in this case being the billionaires, the fascists, and the politicians that fail to represent what people in the US actually want. You must change your perspective (e.g. split the world in two) and critically analyze the systems/powerful individuals that stall or reverse progress.

Those national divorce comments and some of the response calling MAGA voters worms is precisely why I added more thoughts to this thread. I do not believe that L. Hughes’ intention was to literally imply a splitting of society but rather to examine which bad actors are undermining society overall.
