Done this way, there is still a federal requirement to undergo a background check if buying from a licensed dealer, but plenty of states (e.g. Ohio) allow private sales where no background check is required.

You can be charged for knowingly selling a gun to a criminal, but that seems hard to prove.

Per the ATF, non-immigrant visitors to the US can still buy guns as long as they can show a valid hunting or fishing license (easily obtainable without an exam or anything) and check a couple boxes on a form.

*Geib allegedly died of tuberculosis while in the custody of the Soviet interior ministry, according to this letter from the Soviet state archives that was declassified in 1993.

I leave it to the viewer to decide whether this is a meaningful distinction.

See for example these various types of Caestus, which all protect the bottom and back of the fist but don't protect the knuckles you would expect from modern boxing.

Paulus Hector Mair, who was hanged for stealing money to pay for elaborately illustrated books about sword fighting (look, whomst among us...) also appears to have known at least one black person.

Yeah, the flail is super interesting! It was definitely a thing in agriculture, where simple flails were used for threshing wheat, and there are reasonably reliable* depictions of its use as a weapon. It's plausible that there were attempts to create a military version, but it prob. never took off.

On the other hand, Ledall Roll wrote his book in English, but I have no idea what he's talking about. Put a woman's name and a rating out of five next to any of his "chases" and he could be reviewing his favorite brothel for all anyone knows.

That's a kick to the upper leg or abdomen, similar to what you see in Fiore and Talhoffer's books (left).

It's more the kicks to the head (right) that don't show up until the 19th century.

As to whether modern soldiers are "weak," I find myself directionally in agreement with the first two verses of British Grenadiers.

We do not know the intent of ancient authors. Trying to substantiate claims about the reality of the ancient world with the reactions of modern people to ancient fiction is fallacious reasoning.
