Tomorrow is #OctoberBigDay! The simple act of volunteer scientists birding and submitting their lists to eBird all at the same time, produces a powerful dataset that helps us learn about bird migration timing and more! Here's a late migrating Oct #NorthernYellowWarbler that is heading to C. America.

@jodyallair.bsky.social and I just returned from leading one of our most memorable pelagic boat trips ever for Eagle-Eye Tours, out of Tofino, BC. The Laysan Albatross stole the show and hung around so long that we literally had to tear ourselves away from it! #birds #pelagic #albatross #seabirds

Not sure what you're up to, but there are currently thousands of shorebirds moving south through the #pacificnorthwest at the moment. These first cycle Western (L) and Semipalmated (R) sandpipers wanted to demonstrate how bill length can help tell them apart. #birds #birdphotography #migration

This is an alleged Mountain Wren-Babbler from #Borneo but you'll have to take my word for it. The funny part is that someone (not me) gave this a 2 ⭐️ rating on eBird!

I just reached a milestone on #iNaturalist logging my 2000th observation. The simple act of photographing the life around us is not only super fun, it's a powerful tool that can be used for many conservation applications. Here are some of my favourite records over the years. #NerdOutOnNature

It was fascinating watching this needle-waist wasp (Prionyx canadensis) handle this paralyzed grasshopper. She modified her burrow entrance so that it would fit, and proceed to drag it across the path. My phone photo doesn't do this justice but @kyletalksnature.bsky.social nailed it! #NatureIsMetal

Some captures from my #BreedingBirdSurvey along the Lillooet River, between the lakes.
1. Evening Grosbeaks
2. Black Bear
3. Bastian Peak
4. Red-breasted Sapsucker

It's #worldseabirdday and I'm reminded of my first encounter with a Cassin's Auklet on a pelagic boat trip out of Tofino, BC many years ago. This confiding little alcid allowed me to take a close up photo, which is the feature image on the famous Merlin Bird ID app! #seabirds #pelagicbirding

How about a Lark Bunting in #angrybird mode, A Marsh Wren in full #borb mode, a Northern Flicker in #moustache mode, and a Black-capped Chickadee being cheeky. #birds

to raise money for bird conservation. All proceeds go directly to support birds in Canada, at a time when nature and its future need our help the most. Thank you to all those who have donated in the past and if you haven't yet, throw a few bucks our way to keep us going when the going gets tough!

until 11:59 later that day. The BC Big Day Route typically starts in the Okanagan Valley and ends on the Coast in Metro Vancouver. We have schemed up a route that will maximize our chances for seeing as many species as possible, as efficiently as possible. Most importantly, this marathon is meant...

The BC record was set 13 years ago by a team of legendary birders led by @dickcannings.bsky.social and has remained largely unchallenged since then. Attempting a Big Day is not for the faint of heart. It's 24hr slog that starts at the stroke of midnight, usually behind a spotlight, and continues....

Our 2025 @birdscanada Birdathon, raising funds and awareness for bird conservation is less than a week away! This year is special because our team is going to take a run at the British Columbia all time record of 202 species found in one calendar day. This will not be easy for a number of reasons...

Spent an enjoyable morning at Iona celebrating World Migratory Bird Day! Highlights included a couple of Parasitic Jaegers, lots of Western Sandpipers, and this fella! The 'one' Yellow-headed Blackbird in all of Metro Vancouver. @birds.canada @team_ebird #gobirding
