It’s a blood feeding arthropod. The blood and viruses are taken up by ticks from an infected host. So yes they do not have red blood cells but they digest host blood in their midgut.

Aww thank you! I am going to post about the process for that illustration later today. I was pushing for them to change the journal branding to look like an old school comic book. Unfortunately they are not allowed to do that, so I had to compromise
