Since computer smarter than monkey I had to first route from my home to the hub, then the hub to the nearest bus stop to my job. That stop is a 33 minute walk according to other mapping apps. So not accounting for waiting at the hub, a 35-45 minute drive is now a 3-4 hour commute to *get to work*.
Walking and bus options provided by JTA’s trip planner that range from 56 minutes to 1 hour and 26 minutes to get to the transit hub from my house, which would take me 12 minutes to drive to. Meanwhile reader, we use my vehicle on site and to haul materials from retailers, so even if I didn’t drive, someone else’s vehicle would become the work vehicle. Trip options from JTA’s trip planner to get from the hub to an intersection that is 30 minutes away by foot from my job. Trips on the second leg of the one-way commute are an hour to an hour and 15 minutes long.

In the summer of 2010 I exclusively used a bike & bus combo to get around town because of Deepwater Horizon. Just now, 15 years later, I tried using my city’s transit system’s trip planner to give me a route, no matter how many transfers, from my home to work. “There are no results available”

This photo is a zoomed-in look at the advertised price of limes from the photo in the original post. The price as advertised encourages bulk buying, by largely displaying 15 for $2.00. The sign in the original photo also describes the product with the jargon “1 each,” which is jargon from food retail indicating the items are sold individually. $2.00 divided by 15 units is 13.33 cents, which I assumed a capitalist endeavor would round up to 14 cents. This retailer included a very small unit price on this large sale tag, indicating that 1 unit of loose limes is sold for 13 cents.

The Soil Type triangle graph. Typically one would partially fill a jar with a sample of soil, add detergent, and distilled water to break apart the mineral components of the sample. The basic minerals which compose soil separate and settle out thanks to the detergent. One then measures, based on the height of each layer given the height of all layers (excluding organic matter on top, if applicable), the percentage of clay, silt, and sand present in the sample. Then, with those three data points, one sets out to find what their overall “soil type” is. For example, if a soil sample is 80% sand, 9% clay, and 11% silt, then that sample is considered “loamy sand.” If a soil sample is 40% sand, 22% clay, and 38% silt, then that sample is considered “loam.”

i used so many power tools (read: my dinky chainsaw) at work today that i forgot my favorite thing was testing the hedger on fresh cut foliage we were sending to the compost. 10/10 shred the fuckton of non-producing potato vines, flower stalks, end-season okra plants with the hedger first
My coworker using an electric hedge trimming tool to shred wheelbarrows of sweet potato vines we decided to compost instead of put curbside as is our head gardener’s preference.

Sweet potato vines in the background are out of focus, demurring in the afternoon sun. Somewhere in Janisse Ray’s signature work, Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, is an essay about Florida’s megafauna surviving wildfire together in gopher tortoise burrows. Creatures who prey on each other, battle for territory with each other, focus on survival during mutual crisis. Somewhere in my house, I’ve set this book down or it’s fallen between a bed and a wall, and lost track of it.

here’s an action shot of me giving the vetiver a hard trim. the flat edge billhook is superior to the old rice knives we have here, because i can easily sharpen it before using it.

Dappled light comes through this area, which is only made pleasant by robust shade.

cool bugs update!
Reader, I couldn’t help you if I tried to identify this bug. We’re talking moth caterpillar territory. We’re talking Caterpie from pokemon wearing camouflage. All I can tell is that it’s on a Greath Southern Magnolia leaf and it legitimately looks like almost-but-not-quite lizard poop. 10/10 camouflage for a bug out here. Guess who has two thumbs and the same problem, it’s the guy who couldn’t identify the caterpillar in the first photo! This time it’s two identically sized spiky caterpillars, eating the same Dutchman’s Pipe Vine leaf. These bugs look like they’re going in performer cosplay to a Cirque Du Soleil show at a psilocybin festival. There’s an orange/purple/mauve color scheme and yellow spikes happening, with wavy patterning around the 10 or more legs that remind me of the way babies’ legs get chunky and wrinkled. Unhinged design, 0/10 camouflage, 10/10 fantasy bug.

It stands upright on the floor, and a duct is attached to a window insert which blows out warm air. did you know you can just pick up segments of trees off the side of the road, burn and brush, then print them?
The face of a cross-section (also known as a “cookie”) of long leaf pine that has been treated for woodblock printing. The tree was affected by hurricanes and removed by the homeowner, however, the person who cut the tree into sections for ease of removal cut them so large that they got picked up with delays. This ~8” tall cookie weighs ~50lbs or more. There is relief ink on the end grain that is burnt sienna, a color that is a mixture of brown and red, and nearly matches the bark of the long leaf pine. Long leaf pine has an intense history in the southeast that is its own deep dive, which I will leave up to the reader/viewer to pursue. An image of the relief print that was produced by the long leaf pine cookie, clearly showing every tree ring. Imperfections due to rapid drying appear like lightning bolts through the tree rings (called checking, which is undesirable for lumber but which is visually interesting). Other imperfections include scratches left by the bar and chain of the chainsaw used by the person who cut the cookie. The print, on a mulberry paper (a soft fiber made from mulberry trees), hangs on a clothespin line in a print studio).
