Some more #folkhorror film locations. A couple of years back I visited Suffolk to see where Witchfinder General was filmed. First stop was Kentwell Hall, where the witch-ducking scene took place.

Deception Island is an active volcano and has played host to whaling stations and scientific outposts over the years. The images here are a whaling station abandoned since the ‘30s. It’s easily the spookiest place I’ve ever visited.

Most of the interior was filmed in another (private) castle but one scene was shot at Culzean. The castle was still shut after lockdown the first time I went, but I finally managed to get a look inside earlier this year.

Further afield, in Ayreshire, is Culzean Castle, which provided the exterior for Lord Summerisle’s home.
It’s now under control of an even more sinister power … the National Trust for Scotland.

Out on the Isle of Whithorn, you’ll find the library, beach and cave where Rowan makes her shock appearance. The remains of the actual Wicker Man are also here, in what is now a caravan park. Sadly, I was defeated by some horrible weather and didn’t manage to find the exact spot.

The school house is now a holiday cottage, available to rent. We spent a week there in 2022 and I honestly still can’t believe it happened.

Just around the corner from Gatehouse Of Fleet, you’ll find Anwoth, the location of the abandoned church and school house. Amazingly, it looks pretty much the same as it does in the film.

On my first Wicker Man roadtrip, I was able to stay overnight at the Ellangowan Hotel but sadly, the last I heard, it didn’t make it through Covid and is now closed. There is a small museum in Creetown that has a Wicker Man exhibition, so that’s worth a look if you’re passing through.
