Vancouver. Local Politics. Less Local Politics. Tech stuff.

It is certainly interesting that the politician who frames himself as the most conservative is obsessed with regulating what people sell and where they live

The very idea that a politician thinks they should be able to create a prescribed list of approved items for sale really highlights how unhinged local politics is.

It turned out that hating hitler was pretty much the only thing that mattered for a little while. We need leaders that feel that way about Trump.

Oddly though, you can (conditionally) trust conservatives who hate fascists more than they hate the left. Winston Churchill was not a guy with good politics in nearly any area but he hated Hitler more than maybe anyone else in British Politics during the lead up to WWII.

The fact that the same coalition basically picked the next leader of the Green Party is pretty telling, to me.

I think the campaign’s goal was to increase Green Party vote share relative to the BCNDP and they succeeded (for all the good it did the greens). They were always going to claim they got stabbed in the back and the party very stupidly obliged them.

I don’t really see the motives of either actor this way but I agree that the outcome was bad.

I would have preferred to have had the party leave it up to elections BC.

I think they were fearful of it ending up in the courts but if it went there it would have been less harmful to the party.

I’m not sure about proportionality but I think it was a very bad response that hurt the party. I think it did suppress turnout and help the conservatives.

I think it is bad when someone tries to ratfuck the only viable left-of-centre political party in the province.

Elections BC would have had to step in if the party hadn’t and I would have preferred that outcome. IMO the party making the decision was the worst way to handle it.

FWIW I was a likely Appadurai voter until the offer to buy memberships thing happened. After that I would have voted for Eby if the race had gone on (I wish it had).

Characterizing this as “well, actually” is honestly pretty kind and I support people’s right to block for any reason. I do still think democracy matters and Avi Lewis’s role in this ugly saga is a big part of why I won’t support him for federal leader.
