“Why is my exit velo bad?”
The first thing I look at is how they’re testing it. The most likely culprit there is they’re hitting crummy, old baseballs.

Rate coding is the frequency (speed) at which we can activate motor units (fire bundles of muscle fibers)

Some claim this cannot be trained. They are incorrect!
EMG studies on martial artists shows the nervous system advances to training explosively.

Everyone wants big gains this off-season. Want to know the simplest, most straightforward way to do that?
Compete on every rep.

Improving swing speed is not rocket science. But it’s also a bit more complex than “just get strong bro lol” 😂

Developing explosive rotational power comes down to 3 things-
Maximal effort
Minimal fatigue
Execution

That said, it is important to have an idea of how to select an exercise and measure it properly.

The swing on the left yielded a 79 mph bat speed/108 mph exit velocity. The swing on the right yielded 73 mph bat speed/101 mph exit velocity.

Both balls hit at approx. same launch (23° vs 21°), but the 108 is a home run, the 101 would be caught at the warning track.

The lats play a crucial role in throwing power. Everyone knows about pull-ups and rows for strength. Here are ways to train and test power development for that area:
•Straight arm pulldown isometric with crane scale
•Kneeling or standing overhead throw
•Supine overhead throw distance/mph

This athlete has 80 mph bat speeds, having gained 10 mph since becoming a professional player.

Here’s where they made most progress:
Lead arm rotational throw velocity
+10 mph at 2 lbs
Bench Press +60 lbs at .3 m/s (roughly 3 rep max)
Sprint speed -.3 sec @ 30 yds
Pallof iso (crane scale) +30 lbs
