One for my paper with @katefu24.bsky.social using 6 LLMs to show they scored better than 75% of students in my introductory biomedical informatics course. (Figure displayed showing correct answers on the final exam, which is not only easily passed but was completed in about 60 seconds by the LLMs.)

This year marks my 40th consecutive #AMIA2025 fall meeting, dating back to SCAMC, and including the virtual meeting during the pandemic in 2020. Extra special this year is my daughter Alyssa attending, along with my grandson, and we will all be decked out in AMIA t-shirts!

What a great night! I feel better this morning than I have in a long time. Even though I do not agree with all of his policy positions, I am thrilled for Zohran Mandani. Great news in Virginia, New Jersey, and California! I hope this is the beginning of the end of Trump 2, but much work still to do.

I am a Cubs fan through and through, but enjoyed this World Series immensely. I was rooting for the Canadian team just to be able revel at a non-US team winning in the era of Donald Trump, but I can't complain about the victorious team from a blue state with many immigrants on its roster.

A delightful evening at the Friends of the National Library of Medicine gala supporting the NLM and its impact on my career.

I have received this email every Friday since the last century, and subscribing to it is one of the first bits of advice I give to young researchers. But never has the email looked like this. I feel most sad for mid- and early-career researchers whose work will be most impacted.

Sorry, but replacing one form of sugar with another in a product completely devoid of nutritional value is not a win for anyone's health.

After the 60 Minutes settlement and now Stephen Colbert, I have cancelled my Paramount streaming. I can get my news and comedy elsewhere. This also means, as a lifetime fan of Star Trek literally back to TOS of my childhood, I am parting with that as well.

We need to be savvy about how we document and message the adverse consequences of HR1. For example, most people do not realize that most states call their Medicaid programs by different names. So when people say their state program is not Medicaid, we need to make clear that it is.

Another view of the crowd at the No Kings Day March in Manzanita, OR, where a crowd of about 400 came out from the town of population 642 (and a few other smaller ones nearby). Hard to capture everyone in a single photo because we were lined up along US 101, and ...

At least 400 people out for #NoKings Day in this small Oregon coast city of Manzanita (pop 642), with nearly Nehalem (pop 273), on no Kings Day. Most cars driving by on US 101 honked in support. A pleasant, peaceful, and patriotic crowd!

Is it odd for a boomer to give his millennial daughter his vinyl collection? In all honesty, I’m trying to de-clutter, I haven’t owned a record player since before she was born, and I can listen to every song on all that vinyl more easily on Apple Music (and some on Neil Young Archives!).

I don't like everything about Harvard but I will support them unequivocally in this situation.

Well, it was only a matter of time, and now I too have joined the ranks of those with cancelled NIH grants. We received this R25 grant a few years ago and established a wonderful summer internship experience for 9 students per year. From our program officer, who is a great person and advocate:

Hello friends, I am a grandfather! I want to welcome Cooper Hershel Sowles into the world, born on May 5, 2025 at the hefty weight of 8 lbs 12 oz. And wouldn’t you know it, he has my same proclivity for tie-dye! Everyone is tired but otherwise doing well.
