Kennebec russets. This was a new variety for me this year with an earlier maturity date than most russets. Good size and solid beasts. Now to see how they bake up.

Sixty years ago today, Jonathan Daniels put his body between the muzzle of a racist sheriff's shotgun and Ruby Sales. He was killed defending her right to exist in Alabama. Daniels was born in Keene, the small New Hampshire city where I went to college and still do my grocery shopping.

Presente, Molly!

32 years ago, this dog started making a shepherd out of me. She did a serviceable job, passing on the work to the dogs who would follow her. She still visits my dreams at times, usually when I need to be reminded that I know what to do.

I just need to pull my socks up and do it.

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

My Beltane prayer for animals born in this season of renewal.
from Praise Be by Maxine Kumin
Let them prosper, the dams and their sucklings.
Let nothing inhibit their heedless growing.
Let them raise up on sturdy pasterns
and trot out in light summer rain
on the long lazy unfenced fields
of heaven.

At least the original Nazis had the courage of their convictions to do it on their home soil, unlike today's cowards who outsource running their concentration camps to tinpot dictators in banana republics.
