Kennebec russets. This was a new variety for me this year with an earlier maturity date than most russets. Good size and solid beasts. Now to see how they bake up.

Sixty years ago today, Jonathan Daniels put his body between the muzzle of a racist sheriff's shotgun and Ruby Sales. He was killed defending her right to exist in Alabama. Daniels was born in Keene, the small New Hampshire city where I went to college and still do my grocery shopping.

He's been fired from 2 jobs in law enforcement for racist and homophobic slurs, and threatening mass violence; is described by his colleagues as dangerous and unhinged, and yet he remains a member of the NH state Legislature and chair of the Sullivan County Republican committee. There is no bottom.
