Spain, Spanish history (particularly the Civil War). UPenn, Michigan, ICADE: econ., IR, law.

Sergei Eisenstein and motorcycles.

Jack (Handey) of all trades, master of none.
Time-traveling fascist Benedict Cumberbatch really steals the show in this March 1938 malt cream (coffee alternative) ad in an article published in the Nationalist-backing publication Aragon about international "friends".

I am an absolute sucker for coats/jackets, particularly wax-cloth and leather. A true weakness.

Trump’s knack for these types of disarming comments is really something. I wish his parents would have hugged and supported him, because I would have loved to see a non-fully-transactional Trump.

Three big themes (among many) that come up in press and propaganda on both sides of the Spanish civil war.

The role of women, the importance of exercise and sports, and theater.

The battle lines were so long that it’s just littered with positions among olive groves.

So people aren’t usually out there. So it’s more an abstract idea of the war.

Nobody but a few even know what a stripper clip or a pmk round is.

Probably not exactly any of those. The 40-and-unders know about the Battle of Jarama, but most couldn’t tell you where the lines were. And only specific areas are marked as historical. But even large trench systems like this (my photos) are unmarked.

The irony, of course, is that I spent the lunch break documenting shrapnel on a battlefield.

My in-laws brought me a flat cap from Scotland this spring. It’s raining and I threw it in.

I feel like I’m about to glass a bawbag.

Memorial to Soviet volunteers in the Spanish Civil War.

Behind is the Spanish Falange’s yoke and arrows, where the first local boss of the Falange to die in the Civil War is buried.
