here at the Paper of Record, when an open white supremacist leaks someone's college application in an attempt to imply he got unfair race-based special treatment, even though he was rejected, we know what to do: publish it immediately prospect.org/2025/07/09/2...

and that can be true! but then you open the actual newspaper and it's soft-focus profiles of Chris Rufo, a frenzied transphobic crusade, an all-out effort to get the first Black woman president of Harvard canned over bullshit, Get Zohran, etc etc

They operate in terror of stating facts directly—I’m referring to incontrovertible facts, not analysis or opinion—at least if those facts might make Trump and Republicans look bad.

Whether afraid of bad faith lawsuits or something else, those facts can be stated only if attributed to someone else.
Also we have to talk about how journalist now refuse to simply stay fact without having an outside authority saying that a duck is a duck.

It's the normalization of nihilism. Nothing is true, everything is just opinion.
Media standards:

1) No Democratic scandal on par with Trump-Epstein, so it’d be biased and unfair to five it much attention.

2) Trump wouldn’t be shamed into resigning and his cult of personality wouldn’t abandon him, so Trump-Epstein wasn’t worth pursuing.

Way too many think that’s journalism.

I have lost track of how many times I’ve seen a prominent journalist (eg at NY Times) defend against media criticism with something like “but that wouldn’t have changed many votes” or “but Trump supporters wouldn’t have cared.”

So? You’re in the truth business. Or at least you’re supposed to be.
