Lumines Arise is the best entry since the PSP original, and it’s just as fully featured as Tetris Effect. But some of those skins, man…

Feeling good.

Don’t know about this one.

Generally pretty ambivalent towards the original Hollow Knight (fine game, has its issues), and Silksong shocked the hell out of me. It’s “more of the same” but there are so many little refinements and additions that it makes the first game feel like a rough draft to me.

Played through the PS1 Dino Crises this week, and they both really surprised me. The original is indeed “Resident Evil with dinosaurs,” but DC does have its own personality. Especially appreciated how raptors stalk you from room to room; game isn’t scary in the slightest but it is very tense.

Finished Omega 6: The Triangle Stars. If you enjoy old-school Japanese adventure games like Famicom Detective Club and Snatcher, this feels cut from the same cloth, albeit much sillier/slighter. Clearly a passion project from Takaya Imamura (Star Fox/F-Zero artist).

It’s always a bit of a trek getting out to @liretro.bsky.social, but getting to see a plastic robot verrrry slowly lift a top up and down made this year’s visit well worth it. (I mean this with all sincerity.)

If it’s unclear, trust me when I say this is a disgusting amount of Donkey Konging. I played the bejeezus out of this game. And it wouldn’t surprise me if I’m starting a new save file in a few months.

I could point to several 3DS weirdo eShop games, but Freakyforms is the one that jumps to mind. True to its name, you could make all sorts of unsettling abominations and share them online through QR Codes. Don’t know if it still works, but feel free to try scanning in my 2011 Saul Goodman.

166. PixelJunk Eden (PS3) - Effortless grappling hook acrobatics and a hypnotic OST made this one a perfect chill-out game; it’s especially satisfying when you’re sweeping up wave after wave of pollen to fill up the seeds and climb ever higher. #365games

165. Resident Evil (GameCube) - I’ve *enjoyed* the vast majority of mainline games in the series, but REmake is the only one that legitimately scared me throughout. Lisa’s lair and those damn Crimson Heads got to me in a way that standard jump scares didn’t. #365games

164. Splatoon 3 (Switch) - When this debuted, there was an undercurrent of disappointment because it was a more “incremental” sequel. But taken as a whole — ambitious single player, Side Order, more involved special events, tons of QOL features, etc. — it’s a pretty incredible package. #365games

163. Mini Metro (mobile) - A little subway system in your pocket. The incredibly intuitive interface means that you’re laying down tracks in seconds, and the fact that it’s semi-mapped over real cities makes it all feel a bit more tangible than most puzzle games. #365games

162. Soul Calibur II (GameCube) - And speaking of Switch 2 breathing new life into games, I’ve been messing around with this more than expected. Namco perfected the single player fighter here and it still feels like some series are playing catch-up. I could play Weapon Master mode forever. #365games

161. ARMS (Switch) - The character and arena designs, the OST, the COLORS! One of the most stylish games Nintendo has ever developed, and there’s enough mechanical depth between the interchangeable parts and elevation changes that it doesn’t feel too shallow. Worth a revisit on Switch 2. #365games

160. Marvelous: Mouhitotsu no Takarajima (SNES) - I had such a fun time with the fan translation last year. Point-and-click adventuring and Zelda merged to craft something that still feels like nothing out there. An end-of-console-lifespan epic that deserves more love. #365games

159. LocoRoco (PSP) - Even on the blurry PSP screen, this game looks so sharp and vibrant, and the chipmunk tunes only add to the charm. And beyond the presentation, every level is filled with breakable walls and secrets. I was thrilled to see the series get some love in Astro Bot. #365games

158. Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) - I prefer the Retro Studios game but this was a daring sequel to the original. The world felt darker and unsettling, the level theming was more varied and bonus stages were more thoughtfully designed. Even the pre-rendered graphics were entirely pleasant. #365games

157. Space Station Silicon Valley (N64) - Brutally hard and unpolished in spots, but playing as a rocket-powered dog or a polar bear tank is just fun. This was one of the few platformers on the console that tried to break free from the Mario 64 mold, very much for the better. #365games
June 10, 2025 at 5:06 AM
156. Gunstar Heroes (Genesis) - I am not good at run-and-guns, but I power through this one every few years because the weapon combinations and level variety are so damn fun. The board game arena and Seven Force alone would earn GH a spot on this list. #365games
