Protecting communities by holding corporations accountable for their methane emissions
TotalEnergies, our latest #PolluterOfTheMonth, was penalized & ordered by a French court to remove its misleading greenwashing claims. This is the first-ever ruling of its kind against a major oil & gas firm.

TotalEnergies loves to talk about its climate “leadership” — especially at global climate summits.

But while they promise progress on the world stage, communities in TX are still living with the same old leaks, venting, and toxic air.

Announcing November #PolluterOfTheMonth: TotalEnergies

At the UN climate summit, they boast about "continuous methane monitoring." Meanwhile, Earthworks investigations found repeated pollution events at Total’s fracking sites. See the full picture at: https://bit.ly/4ofiCuI

According to the UN’s new IMEO report, 88% of alerts sent to oil and gas companies about major methane pollution events are ignored.

This means nearly nine out of ten super-emitters caught from space go unfixed. The data is clear: voluntary alerts aren't enough.

Our #PolluterOfTheMonth, by the numbers:

❌ 4+ methane super-emitter plumes since July
❌ Just 1 hour of combined emissions = a year of driving 180 cars
❌ $8.8 million in penalties since 2023
❌ Enough wasted gas to power 5,800 homes

Oxy keeps talking “net zero,” but the math doesn’t lie.
October 21, 2025 at 5:00 PM
PR spin vs. reality.

Oxy claims to be “leading the way to clean energy.”

In reality? Methane pollution so big it’s visible from space, fines piling up, and gas wasted that could have powered thousands of homes.

This isn’t leadership. This is why Oxy is our October #PolluterOfTheMonth.

🚨Our October #PolluterOfTheMonth: Occidental Petroleum (Oxy)

In July alone, satellites caught multiple methane plumes blasting into the sky from Oxy wells in TX & 5 pollution events from their wells in CO since the start of 2025.

Huge thanks to Ezra Brown for fantastic original art, which helps us hold Enduring Resources accountable! The fossil fuel producer operates in some of the country's most underregulated areas, allowing operators to often circumvent and evade enforcement.

When the gas industry calls methane “clean,” it’s not honesty—it’s just better PR.

Most people have heard natural gas is “better,” but here’s the truth:
💨 It’s methane, a climate superpollutant
🔥 80× more powerful than CO₂
🫁 And it leaks toxic chemicals right into our homes
September 25, 2025 at 7:49 PM
🌫️ New research found: every large methane release in CA exceeded health benchmarks for benzene, a cancer-causing pollutant.

That means we are breathing in far more than just methane. #BigGasPolluters call it “natural gas.” The truth? It’s a toxic chemical soup. https://lat.ms/3KirhO4

September's #PolluterOfTheMonth operates >1,000 wells on Navajo, Ute, or Apache land, many in a region known as the "Checkerboard," where regulatory jurisdiction can change quickly.

This allows operators like Enduring Resources to dodge/evade enforcements. https://bit.ly/3VEP257

Why is Enduring Resources our #PolluterOfTheMonth?

- > $600k Clean Air Act violation fines
- ~200k mcf of methane gas lost to venting in NM alone
- At least 3 methane plumes visible from space
- 17 pollution events since Apr 2025, 6 within 1 mile of schools

Nearly every time methane leaks from an oil & gas facility, so do hazardous air pollutants. PSE's #MethaneRiskMap models the health risk of these emissions on surrounding communities. TLDR;

📍 126,600+ people live within 2 miles of these modeled methane emissions events: https://bit.ly/4n2AYyM

Meet our September #PolluterOfTheMonth, Enduring Resources. They primarily operate in the San Juan Basin in NM. ~70% of its wells are located on Navajo, Ute, or Apache land. Visits to the company's well sites indicate that pollution events are frequent. https://bit.ly/3VEP257

Huge thanks to Iris Gottlieb for lending their incredible talent to our Big Gas Polluter art series!

Iris' bold, original piece brings new energy and perspective to our August Polluter of the Month: Hilcorp Energy — the #1 methane polluter in the U.S. oil & gas industry. https://bit.ly/4foUylA

Reasons why Hillcorp is our #PolluterOfTheMonth:

💨 Spews methane pollution from New Mexico to Alaska
💸 Racked up nearly $24 million in environmental penalties
🏫 Caught releasing methane just ¾ of a mile from elementary schools
☠️ Supported trade groups that lobbied to kill the methane emissions fee

Hilcorp is one of the most dangerous methane polluters in the U.S. — and now they’re off the hook.

When Congress eliminated the methane emissions fee earlier this summer, it removed a critical tool meant to hold underperforming oil and gas companies accountable.
August 19, 2025 at 5:49 PM
🚨 Methane pollution so massive, it was visible from space.

On May 27, 2025, Hilcorp’s San Juan Gas Plant in Bloomfield, New Mexico was caught red-handed by satellite — spewing methane into the air at 462 kilograms per hour.

📍 Two of our recent #PollutersOfTheMonth are back in headlines in CO!

Officials just revealed that contractors hired by Chevron & Civitas allegedly submitted falsified environmental data at more than 400 oil and gas sites.
July 31, 2025 at 4:14 PM
Chevron’s Bishop well had a blowout in Galeton, CO for 5 days this April.

This isn’t just a local disaster—it’s a warning. When #BigGasPolluters cut corners, entire communities pay the price. #PolluterOfTheMonth

An amazing, original piece from artist @garybaseman accompanied our July #PolluterOfTheMonth announcement. We needed something that simultaneously showcased the destructive nature of fossil fuels while poking fun at them, as @jameshadgis.bsky.social shared:
