So fascinating that I managed to forget to take photographs of everything except a couple of the manuscripts on display (on ne se refait pas). One is obviously a pale capture of the new acquisition, so for a better view of John and his feet, see the digitised version and jump to fol. 92v-93r! 2/2
Bodleian Library MS. Duke Humfrey c. 1, 13th century New Testament in Old French, open at fols.92v-93r. Each folio has two columns, with three historiated initials on 92v (one in the first column, two in the second one) and a single one in the second column of 93r, all showing John the Evangelist with varying lengths of scroll. MS. Duke Humfrey d. 2, fols. xxi verso-1r, with the following label below: English husbandry for duke Humfrey. The dedication copy of an anonymous English verse translation of the Opus agriculturae of the late antique author Palladius, presented to Duke Humfrey in the early 1440s and bearing his coat of arms. The translator's preface and epilogues are written in a complex system of coloured inks which picks out the rhyme scheme of the verses. This is the only text entirely in English known to survive from Humfrey's collection; his gifts to Oxford appear to have consisted only of texts in Latin, and included a copy of Palladius' Latin text which may have been the exemplar for this translation. The manuschpt was acquired by the Library in 1984.

Portrait of Laura Battiferri by Bronzino, 1560, now kept at the Palazzio Vecchio in Florence. She is depicted with her body turned three quarters towards the painter, her head fully turned to her right, wearing a grey and white headpiece covered by a transparent veil falling onto her shoulders before gathering at the front of her bust, where it is pinned to her black dress. The front of her bust is covered by the chemise with an elegant plissé, with a golden bead holding it closed at her throat; the same white chemise also peeks out of her sleeves. For jewellery, she only wears a plain gold pendant, the bottom of which is hidden below the neckline of her dress, and a gold ring with a black stone on her left ring finger. Her hands hold open a manuscript, turned towards the painter. It is bound in black covers, edges coloured red, and uses brown ink.

The Early Modern Transnational Book Conference: printing, translating, and reading 1500-1800. The University of Manchester and Chetham’s Library, May 28th-29th Please send a 250-word abstract to EARLYMODERNBOOKCONFERENCE@OUTLOOK.COM by the 12th March This two-day conference will celebrate the early modern book as an object of transnational exchange, from printing and publishing to translating into and out of Latin and the vernaculars to exploring early modern readers and the marks they leave upon their books. Held in part at Chetham's Library and with the participation of the John Rylands Library in Manchester, this event will bring together researchers with interests in the transnational early modern book to share their ideas in the setting of two historically significant libraries. We especially welcome and encourage applications from early career academics and postgraduate researchers. Back to conference calls for papers with Courtly experienced in the premodern world, 1200-1800: Cultural, material and sensory experiences in the world of the court, 22nd-24th August, Palacký Universitu Olomouc, Czechia. Submission April 2nd.
The annual conference of the Society for Court Studies organised by the European branch and Palacky University Olomouc, with support from the Centre for Research on Courts and Residences of the Institute of History at the Czech Academy of Sciences, will take place over 2 days with an optional excursion to Chateau Kromeriz on day 3. Keynotes TBC For interested participants, preliminary estimates indicate that early bird conference fees will potentially be: PhD/ECRs €18.00 Professors* €33.00 (*includes Assistant/Associate/Full) Discounted rates will also be offered to members of the Society for Court Studies. The conference organisers also plan to offer a limited number of travel bursaries for PhD/ECRs. Official registration details, confirmed fees and bursary information will be available in Spring 2024. A publication of the conference proceedings is planned. Please be aware that while the conference will be live streamed, presentations will be in-person only. Exceptions will be considered. Call for Proposals, Special Issue 2026 2024-01-30 Journal for the History of Knowledge - Call for Proposals, Special Issue 2026 The Journal for the History of Knowledge features an annual special issue, compiled by guest editors, which explores a theme central to the journal's scope. We are currently accepting proposals for the 2026 Special Issue. Proposals should contain the following: • A description of the proposed theme (1500-2000 words) highlighting its significance for the history of knowledge • A table of contents (typically 8-12 articles of 8000 words) • Abstracts of the articles • Two-page CVs of the editors; short biographies of the contributors • An outline of the production process up to manuscript submission. Following the success of last year's conference, TransHistorical is back! (slightly rebranded) The Trans Historical conference provides an opportunity for researchers of trans and nonbinary histories to learn from one anothers' expertise and to advance trans theories by working more cohesively in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment. The conference is designed for researchers, practitioners and professionals of all stages and backgrounds who work with any aspect of trans and nonbinary histories, from prehistory to the twenty-first century. As TransHistorical does not limit location or period of time there is no set theme - a variety of subjects and approaches is celebrated!
