"Not only," MacMechan adds, "did it pass the censor, but it reached the point from which it set out in a fair state of preservation, in fact quite fresh, but for a coating of Flanders mud." /thread

While Jones was unsure of its origin, MacMechan posed a possibility [unverified]: "There are several Dalhousians in the 25th, notably Captain Jothan Logan [&] as the Gazette as printed on the 17th & unearthed in Flanders a month later, it could not have been very ong in the particular dug-out."

Clearly, to find an object with a coincidental tie to home in such an apocalyptic locale came as a surprise to Jones: "Where it came from or by whom it was owned I know not, but thinking you might like to have it, I am sending it along. I hope it gets past the censor."

"Perhaps his most striking characteristic was the ease with which he could dash off poems and songs. No doubt his best know production is the song 'There's not a Flaw, Flaw, Flaw on the Boys in Law'."

What he discovered was an issue of his alma mater's monthly, the Dalhousie Gazette, spotting this passage: "The Poet of Dalhousie is also among the officers of this regiment. O. B. Jones, better known as "Toby" [one of the best known members of the Arts Class of 1911] holds a lieutenancy"

"This morning, clad in our gas helmets we were awaiting a gas attack, I was getting my guns in position & while in a trench about 90 yds from [the enemy] I suddenly caught sight of my own name on a piece of paper half buried in an old fallen in dug out, where many good soldiers [...] have existed."

Not only is today the 1st day of the Best Season, it is also #HobbitDay (celebrated based on Sept 22nd being both Bilbo's & Frodo's birthday). I'm celebrating by continuing reading my 50th anniversary HoughtonMifflin edition with the lad. He's iffy on it so far, but I'm enjoying a nostalgic revisit.

Fantastic evening for an aging punker, with Buzzcocks and Descendents on one bill on the first night of the tour. Two acts I never thought I'd see here.

Hey cool, thanks #SpotifyWrapped for giving me once a year what lastfm gives me every day of the year! Thus The Cure as #1 comes as no surprise. And would have been no surprise on any media.

"Particular things struck me: the relationship of people to their surroundings; the activity, sheer physical efforts. Passing cables, securing depth charges. The gadgetry of the destroyer bridge & the various duties being carried out." legionmagazine.com/donald-camer...
