When I was little, I was given a kids’ carpentry set, which was mostly just endless frustration that I couldn’t get the plane to work. One of the reasons I love doing woodwork is that raising a pile of shavings is like a triumph for my 7 year old self.

The Claimant paused a second and turned and gave her a look, followed by a leer. “I knew your father,” Gladys said. “Briefly.” “Into chorus girls, was he?” the Claimant sneered. And this was the worst thing he could possibly have said, because now Miss Gladys Dunchurch was his enemy.
