I hear some steps, but not sounds. I think it has to do with the thickness of the floor plate and the type of sound. Concrete vibrates and carries impact related sounds, but reflects sounds.... Just my experience though, yours is different.

i think it really depends on how the buildings are built and maintained, not so much the material type. Soviet blocks used precast panels, iirc. I very much like my current place

Not sure if I agree with allowing no sprinklers in concrete structures. Plenty of things in units are combustible, such as the flooring, fixtures, furniture, and more.

i live in a stout concrete building and the only time i hear my neighbors is when they drop large objects on the ground

i agree. that's not what the discussion is about though. when transit service is inadequate, builders have to spend more money for parking so their buildings are just as popular if they were somewhere with good transit.

it's not up to us to tell them what that number is.

what's the incentive for building a building with no parking in an area with no transit? why would a developer do that? it should be up to them. if they think it's feasible, so be it. maybe rent will be cheaper

Thanks for sharing - did you know the OE had purchased ROW for a bridge across the Willamette in Corvallis? there were plans to run trains down 4th street eventually... ROW was eventually sold back to the city when service was started to be cut.

can one of you nerds identify the style of this building? i really like it. the whole town (Arlington) was relocated in 1960ish by the army corps after it was planned to be flooded by the John Day dam.

other places in the world that allow these kinds of structures do not see a significant change (or sometimes even lower) fire death rates with other building types.

plus, they're safer than the structures they're replacing, which is largely single family homes with no sprinkler systems/alarms.

less staircase load than one floor of most double loaded corridor. buildings fires in staircases are exceedingly rare, and hallway space is limited. not sure of the specifics, but in Oregon the footprint of the buildings are limited as well.
