This is pretty impressive, actually...

The sG model that seems to like Pionk gives him a lot of credit for 5v5 defense, not goals. I think it might be because 54 had substantially better 5v5 xGA metrics with 4 than without last season, so Pionk gets more of the weight ("credit") of the overall metrics this year, too.

The difference between the McCurdy (hockeyviz) sG & evolvinghockey RAPM models are likely related to who gets credit/blame. It's been assumed that 54 saves 4, but they actually improve each other and perhaps the hockeyviz model gives Pionk more credit. Note the 2024-25 WOWY; mutual benefits.

Good to hear about Heinola recapturing his game. I'd still like to see what Salomonsson can do at the NHL level.

Not buying the Pionk resurgence?

I thought Samberg was good. The problem was the forwards (especially Scheifele's line), and DeMelo really struggled.

Two graphs that have surprised me (pleasantly) early this season...

I've been pondering Neal Pionk's resurgence over the past couple of seasons.

It seems largely driven by defensive metrics.

Any clues as to whether this is driven by better metrics/performance or model refinement, or both?

He's much-maligned by some pundits, & beloved by Jets coaches, it seems.

I've been drawing blanks (literally) on the Jets team page of hockeyviz.com.

I can see the charts for other teams.

Any suggestions?

I'll think of the Ducks...

Meanwhile, this is really something. I'm still trying to better understand what's going on with Pionk.

I just hope we don't get this from O'Shea and the Bombers' management.

Pionk cooking up some good chaos so far this season?
October 31, 2025 at 11:57 AM
It's early, but Pionk seems intent on making some erudite heads explode.

There was actually a contingent of fans / pundits that suggested that the Jets should consider leaving Morrissey and his fresh new contract unprotected for the Kraken expansion draft. In retrospect, that would have been very ill-advised.

Here are a few other line combos (combined xG +/- per 60) along with the individual metrics (per 60). Not many high-minute combos with particularly poor results. Here are 5 top-performing lines, and one mediocre one. General impression is that the Jets line synergy might be relatively good.
October 24, 2025 at 5:18 PM
One other way of thinking about it is do the combinations seem to out-perform the individuals within the combos? xG +/- per 60 (RAPM adjusted for individuals). Here is how the individual players' metrics line up with their lines.
October 23, 2025 at 9:25 PM
The next two charts show the individual and combination-based EV xG +/- metrics (per 60) for F and D. The data are from @evolving-hockey.com with the individual showing the RAPM adjusted metrics. x-axis and size of combo bubbles depict the time-on-ice. 3/n

3 charts. The first shows the difference between the overall combined xG plus-minus metrics for individual D and F, in comparison to the overall metrics D pairs and F lines for those players (weighted by TOI). I've used @evolving-hockey.com RAPM xG +/- for players and adjusted for combos. 2/n

When Samberg returns the Jets could get back to their setup of three D pairs beating their matchups. There's just one hefty No. 5-sized problem.
