Speaking to Midday Report, Wellington mayor Andrew Little said he supported the plan overall, but that discussion was needed.

People losing homes and businesses had been foreshadowed for some time, but there would also be "much higher" traffic on streets not used to it.

The project would also take two hectares of the Town Belt - a "very special feature" of Wellington, Little said.

I'd love to live in the Wellington that exists only in the minds of people who do not live in Wellington.

The bulk of NZ's taxes is not being used to create galleries and museums here. The previous Archives building was long overdue to be replaced. And most government departments are renting.

The vast bulk of our nation’s taxes flow to Wellington where the big organs of state create and maintain key institutions in landmark buildings to house them: archives, galleries, museums, government head offices etc.

Interesting that Tom Hunt quotes a skeet from Tory Whanau that explicitly refers to Nicola Young but leaves Young's name out of his article.

And by interesting I mean fucking dodgy deliberately misleading reporting from a man who bears significant responsibility for the culture of toxic misogyny.

I remember giving Nicola Young a chair role and extra portfolios. Certainly didn’t stop her spreading misinformation about me on air and calling for my resignation.

Why is the new mayor of Wellington City Andrew Little talking about everyone but Wellington City when asked about amalgamation? And I don't recall Little campaigning on amalgamation so his treating it like an inevitability before seeking the views of Wellington City residents is pretty piss poor.

Council amalgamation
In the 2025 local body elections, Lower Hutt and Porirua voters both supported a non-binding poll which asked if their respective councils should explore creating one council for the Hutt Valley, Porirua and Wellington.

It would combine relevant services and functions regionally, while keeping appropriate local services and decision-making local.

Andrew Little told RNZ he was in favour of amalgamation in principle and thought it was "all but inevitable".

"I think increasingly people who live in the Wellington region, whether it's Wellington City, Porirua, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, see themselves as a region.

"You know half of the Hutt Valley works in Wellington during the working week."

Little said it was time to have the discussion not just with leaders but the community.

It's also worth noting that Labour's policy announcement isn't te tiriti based. Seems like investment in Māori-led projects is an afterthought. "Partnership" includes business (first! Ahead of communities) but not iwi Māori. These "principles" could have been written by the current government.

He said the fund would also have the potential for co-investment with Māori organisations

Partnership - working alongside business, unions and communities to shape and create new markets, providing clarity, direction and confidence to invest for the long term.
