In last week's Budget, the Chancellor chose to freeze rail fares & phase out the fuel duty cut.

She also chose to introduce a small per-mile charge for EVs, increase tax on private jets, and invest in rail projects, all things we've called for.

Buses and National Parks are a great match!

Buses mean non-drivers aren't excluded from visiting beautiful places. And they cut traffic, which is good for local people, visitors and nature.

Here's our reaction to today's Budget...
Ben Plowden, Chief Executive of Campaign for Better Transport: "With the end of the fuel duty cut in due course, a new distance-based electric vehicle charge and freezing rail fares, this Budget is finally starting to rebalance transport costs towards more sustainable modes. However, the Chancellor missed a huge opportunity to go further by failing to close the aviation tax loophole which exempts aviation fuel duty and allows private jet passengers to fly VAT free."

We're calling on the Government to support public and shared transport, walking, wheeling and cycling, which have all these benefits and more.

🙌 Regulated rail fares are now frozen until at least March 2027! That's a big campaign win for us and something that will not just benefit rail passengers, but the whole country. Now we want to see fare and ticketing reforms speeded up to ensure long-term affordability.

The Chancellor has announced that regulated rail fares will be frozen next year. A huge win for passengers and the economy, and one of our Budget asks!
Quote from Ben Plowden, CEO of Campaign for Better Transport: “We know that cost is the number one concern for people wanting to travel by train, so it is very welcome that fares will be frozen next year as we have been calling for. As well as helping households with the cost of living, this will enable more people to choose rail, reducing traffic on our roads, benefitting the economy, helping the environment, and connecting communities across the country. One of the Government's six objectives for the reformed railways is that they should be affordable. As plans for Great British Railways gather pace, this is a positive sign that affordability for passengers is being given the high priority it deserves.”
