I was today years old when I learned the final appendix to Thomas Paine’s Common Sense — the pamphlet that set fire to the Revolution — concludes with a firm rejection of “mingling religion with politics.”

The context is he’s fighting with Quakers he says aren’t Quakers, but he doesn’t mince words.
