"He likened A.I. researchers to nuclear scientists in the nineteen-thirties: “This is the most interesting time in the life of these people. And, at the same time, they know that what they are working on has grave implications for humanity. But they cannot stop because of the curiosity to learn.”

Fascinating piece on how AI may well think more like us than we’d like to believe. And why that’s both groundreaking and curiously sad. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Spotted Manchester airport. What problem do the people of Guernsey and Dubln have with hats and glasses, masks and headphones?
They really, really want to see their visitors.

I can certainly get the logic here. Wonder what others think.
I'm not sure about just crediting institutions in an unlevel playing field but fewer publications feels sensible in this time of abundance.

How early do we embed open science practice? Are there opportunities earlier in life to embed the practice of checking sources, evidence, data for information we encounter? Do we embed scientific thinking young to counter the disinterest at undergrad level that @drbeth.bsky.social outlined? #R2Rconf

Does the pain of making data available outweigh the benefits of practising open data sharing for researchers? Having a data policy is not enough. Many researchers don't read them for a start. Then there's the doing the sharing. Lots of support needed. @drbeth.bsky.social of @crick.ac.uk at #R2Rconf
