I write
I read
I walk in the countryside
I listen to music
I read 13 of these when I was a child. How many of them are still read today, I wonder? I'm currently relishingWuthering Heights.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson is one of the scariest books I've ever read. Lovely, flowing, immensely satisfying read.

On one of my rare 'live' school visits, I shared The Seamaiden's 0dyssey with a very receptive Yr 7 at All Saints in Sheffield

I'm back with Kate Grenville books just now, reading Restless Dolly Maunder.
But my head is still with Jane Gardam. They have a similar sense of place and eye for detail, do you think?

The Guardian reports that in his speech at the Reading Rights Summit in Liverpool, Frank Cottrell-Boyce referred to 'children, who instead of turning the pages, try to swipe them or make the pictures grow bigger with their fingers.' A good point. Early skills, but where is the sharing?

Lovely!
Yesterday Inclusive Books for Children announced the 2025 shortlist for the IBC awards. #NewIllustrationoftheDay
is by Ruth Hearson from the shortlisted Zeki Eats Out, in a series of books about Zeki by Anna McQuinn. A happy family scene drawn with warmth, rich colour & precision. From Alanna Max.

We don’t care if you’re a royal or David Beckham, we’ll call you out for the vile practice of bird shooting.

It’s repulsive, cruel, and utterly shameful. There’s no excuse for this vile practice.

I'm lovingly re-uniting with Jane Gardam books, and it's like meeting up with old friends. And I've just started reading one I've never met before; Crusoe's Daughter. I'm making a new friend! Do you have a favourite to recommend?

Julia Donaldson is now the best selling author since records began! This is such a wonderful achievement for an author who opens the world of the imagination to very young readers.
