Casual reminder that the myth of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is a cruel hoax designed to convince poor people from all walks of life that the injustices they face are a result of their own actions, rather than an oppressive system rigged against them.

The VF profile notes Wiles was incorrect about violent Jan. 6 defendants receiving greater-than-recommended sentences, but it doesn’t capture how wildly off base she was. I don’t think there was a single above-guidelines sentence given in a J6 felony case. www.vanityfair.com/news/story/t...

New from me at @motherjones.com: Senate Republicans blocked the Democratic plan to extend ACA tax credits while trying to pass (and failing too) health saving accounts plans, which @mirandayaver.bsky.social told me, are not useful for poor and middle-class folks. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
Senate Republicans blocked yet another chance to save Obamacare subsidies
ACA health care "is not a luxury item. It is basic survival for a lot of people."

Don't any of these guys remember before the ACA? Emergency rooms were overwhelmed, many people without insurance couldn't get PCPs, and overcrowding and long wait times were a persistent national public health problem.
Of course the Senate voted against ACA tax credits. Republicans refuse to see the pain they’re causing everyday Americans who are just trying to survive this regime.

Keep the faith, folks - in elections nationwide, we’re winning our democracy back by huge margins!

Their closing message to Indiana: change your maps to artificially benefit the President's political party or 'roads will not be paved' as punishment.

They are openly saying this.

Who would want to live in a country that works like that?

This isn’t just an all-male panel debating women’s bodies — it’s a blueprint. Republican bills like this redefine “personhood” so broadly that they can criminalize miscarriage, restrict birth control, block IVF, and even punish people for sharing reproductive-health information.

German chocolate cake was named after English-American chocolate maker Samuel German, and uses baking chocolate—which may be the Baker’s Chocolate brand which was named after the Baker family who owned that chocolate company.

French toast was *maybe* named after Albany innkeeper Joseph French.

Before the midterms of 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional opponents traitors and said they should be hanged.

Voters were so profoundly moved by his words... that they gave his opponents a supermajority in Congress, and the nation got the Fourteenth Amendment.
