I saw a video of the commencement ceremony of UTRGV (a HSI) that included a mariachi band playing Pomp
and Circumstance. A collective “aww” in the crowd made me a little teary. There will always be a place for institutions that serve the needs of communities, and this includes cultural connections.

One thing I loved about Nikki Giovanni was her intentional ways of being accessible to our generation. Many of us have memories of her visiting our high schools or colleges (or both!) and how she made time to hang, spread wisdom, and speak life.
