Proud 3rd generation union member. It all started when two of my grandfathers sat down in Flint.
I’m now officially a three dog household. Because in the midst of…everything…why not grab a bit more joy and snuggles where you can?

I’m thinking I should make Gunner (right) a foster fail.

My government is stripping my beloved child of their right to healthcare and me of my rights as a union member.

But everything can be made just a tiny bit better by adopting a third dog, right? 💔

If any faculty out there are wondering if their employer is going to succumb to complete Nous-lead death, receiving an email with this subject line is a good indication that the answer is “yes.”

Transplanted 4 of the 10 herb container garden pack I bought from my kids’ band fundraiser this spring to overwinter in the kitchen. If that basil makes it two weeks, I’ll be amazed. But it kept me offline, working with my hands for a couple hours during these dark days, and that was worth it.

Carnivale.

20 years ago HBO had no idea how to handle a genre show.

If you hear or read interviews with the creator about the full 6 season arc he had planned (only 2 were produced), it will absolutely break your heart.

Edgar and Zuzu say “Hello Charlie!”

My first foster dog, Mutt Damon, chewed the corner of my vintage MCM sofa this week and I’m still seriously thinking I may have to adopt him this week. Watching him love my other two elderly dogs has really done me in.

It’s official: I’m in love.

D closed out junior high by getting an award as top student in their humanities class. Very proud humanities prof mom moment. 🥹💜

Was thrilled to see another family wearing respirators at the award ceremony. Should have immediately guessed that it was @mark-ungrin.bsky.social. Love fellow maskers!

This is phenomenal news for Alberta families and trans youth.

A huge thank you to @skippingstone.ca for their legal advocacy on this bill.

Are you sure? I mean, we’re both from the “Acts Mean, Is Nice” quadrant.

Manmohan Singh and Jimmy Carter dying in the same week truly feels like the end of a political era on a global scale. I don’t believe I’ll see leaders of such intellect and integrity in office again during my lifetime, but I hope my grandchildren might…someday.

It took 13 yo Zuzu less than 15 mins to gut the Christmas ham toy I brought home from Shoppers. But it brings her so much joy to gut her “prey”—she was a formidable hunter in her younger, pre-rescue days—that I can’t be mad at her. But also, this is why I only buy dog toys on Boxing Day clearance. 😂

The Dodgers beat the Yankees in 5 and we are at the pinnacle of Diwali. This is truly the season of light triumphing over darkness, good over evil.
May this portend well for our next calendar week.

My PhD is from UVa, and I’m faculty at UCalgary. Really pondering what it means to have such close affiliations with two of the most cruelly ironic photos of the student protests today.
May 10, 2024 at 4:17 PM
I thought my my akma mater would have the worst ironic photographic image from these student protests. But my employer said, “hold my beer.”

“Disrupt Something.” Just not like that.

The text of my letter, in case anyone would like to use it as a template. This is an easy way to support UVA students even if you live far from C’Ville presently.

Pro-tip: don’t out yourself as someone who always felt like an outsider at UVA by using “campus” instead of “grounds” like I did.
May 4, 2024 at 7:19 PM
I case any folks affiliated with @UVA follow me here, the student protestors are asking for our help. I emailed everyone in this list, plus Dean Acampara & President Ryan.

13 chose the image for our inspiration, spent days talking through the design with me, selected the colour palate from my stash, and learned the coraling technique (aka branch fringe) to bead the axon & dendrites.
I beaded the cell body using free form peyote stitch.

Usually I’m the humanities homework parent, for obvious reasons. But when my 13yo was assigned to create a model of a cell out of household items, we sprang into beading action. Here’s our beaded model of a nerve cell.

Thank you, Dheepa! Declan went to his dad’s tonight to keep him safe. And my RAT is negative. But the dogs’ “mom is sick mode” test is definitely positive for something.

Every university prof I know who teaches large first and second year lecture sees about 25% attendance on most days. Maybe, just maybe, we should rethink how we are delivering education to secondary and post secondary students?

I would not only watch this, I’d DVR it and rewatch it multiple times.

There are many, many reasons to adore Elie Mystal. But his reasoning for why Michigan is better than Ohio* is top of the list. 10/10, no notes.
*TL;DR: Jim Jordan & JD Vance seal the deal.

13 went to his dads house for the first time in a month tonight (due to a COVID outbreak there). Always tough to see him go. But when I came upstairs tonight I found he’d left my two favourite of his stuffies on my pillow. How did I ever get to be mom to such an amazing human?
