Canadian women’s university hockey model through 23 games and 1700 unblocked shot attempts.

Slow start for the offence, partly due to some bad luck, partly due to some great goaltending through the first two weeks.

We're hoping that this research will be able to provide data defining how scaling hockey environments may support players and goalies.

As an added bonus, this award allows me to also continue our work in women's hockey, specifically in player development and evaluation, and scoring!

Given that the new school year is starting, I'm thrilled to share that I was selected as part of the final class of SHRC Vanier Scholars! This scholarship supports our work on trying to better understand what the best development pathway is for young hockey players.

Big summer Saturday over here where we’re drawing hockey practice drills for academic articles on team practice learning design.

Are 2 on 1s peer reviewed? Makes you think.

Had a ton of fun this past weekend sharing some of our research on goaltending, practice design, and team offensive tactics.

Bonus fun getting to speak about some of what I consider seminal work by @allthreezones.bsky.social and @hockeyviz.com

Hockey is so fascinating because it’s hard to look at Phillips’ career and say anything other than “yeah the puck doesn’t go in much”.

The USA is winning the race in letting their younger players rise

Imagine not posting the actual shot breakdown information

And my favourite goal of the game - a nice delay entry to open a lane up.

One final chart series from #USport Women’s Nationals from the 5th place game where UBC took it 5-1 over Alberta.

Insurance goal off an unbelievable effort from Santerre again as she got crushed into the boards. This angle rocks.

Bishop's game winning goal by the one and only Gabi Santerre.

By the numbers

Expected Goals:
Waterloo: 2.34
Bishop's: 1.55

Big time goalie steal for Ericka Gagnon in this one. Gagnon was 5.03 goals saved above expected in the semis and finals combined, incredible.

Bishop's University is your 2025 #USport Women's Hockey National Champions! First tournament appearance, first title.

A very even game that saw momentum swings throughout. Score effects a big differentiator in the final expected goals as Waterloo made a late push down 1-0 in the third.

Toronto's game winning goal, which took a fortunate back door bounce.

The University of Toronto is the 2025 #USport Women's National Hockey Championship bronze medalists, winning 3-1 over Concordia.

Toronto held the quality advantage throughout, and held off a late surge from Concordia looking to tie it up.

The goalies won at least once this weekend at #USport women’s nationals.

Pretty interesting call on this second goal for the Pandas. One could make a convincing argument that this may have been a hand pass goal.

Alberta shot map featuring a hidden goal underneath another one of their goals (bottom red circle).

St. FX struggled to get things into the middle of the ice in this one.
March 23, 2025 at 5:22 PM
Game by the numbers.

Expected Goals:
Alberta: 2.92
St. FX: 1.62

Another good example of Expected Goals being more telling than Fenwick or Corsi in women's collegiate hockey.

Catching up on some of the consolation bracket games at the #USport 2025 Women's National Championships. Alberta took yesterday's first game 3-0 over AUS champs St. FX.

St. FX outshot and out Fenwick'd Alberta, but total quality was always in favour of the Pandas.
