Thinking of my grandmother's brother Cprl Christopher Connolly, gunner in the Royal artillery in WW2 and taken prisoner of war at Dunkirk. Freed by the Allies after 5 years. Died not long after the war in an industrial accident. Buried in the Abbey cemetery, Bantry. #VEDay

Appalling interview on @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social with Sebastian Gorka. A right wing Orban fellow traveller. Ignorance and condescension masquerading as "combative." Verging on misogynistic. #tariffs

Lovely evening looking out over the inner harbour from the GAA grounds in Bantry. #speirgorm #bluesabu

Beautiful day walking near Bantry Bay but cold in a northerly wind. Hungry Hill on the majestic Beara peninsula in the distance. #speirgorm

Also time for our Department of Education to get off Xitter. Announcements on everything important from the DoE appears first on Xitter.

Needless to add, I learned this lesson only after making some of the mistakes @strickomaster.bsky.social describes in his book.

An expenditure of €100k on TB eradication looks too small. Are there enough vets available for testing?

Delicious Avgolemono soup from the @financialtimes.com magazine Recipe Club. Something different & fed everyone, including fussy eaters. #speirgorm

None of this will happen any time soon. Kite flying from the Minister for Defence/PR bull. Already a struggle to attract people into the defence forces.

This is the essence of the need for planning exemptions for small modular homes. Housing policy has failed. The opposition has no better ideas. From @thejournal.ie

The response by the Leas Ceann Comhairle was the best bit.

I had to laugh when I read this. "There was no formal process to escalate warnings." Who's fault is that? www.irishtimes.com/politics/202...

Eamon de Valera bested him in 1945 after Churchill's bombastic castigation of Irish neutrality during WW2. Churchill was a "great man" but of his time & with many human flaws.

Excellent analysis by @hlinehan.bsky.social in the @irishtimes.com. €5.3 million spent on the IT project "written off". That would build a mid sized school. #edchatie

Bantry 05.02.2025 at 21.00. Clear skies and a chilly 3 degrees.

Thought this would be better. Enjoyable in parts. Author determined to take us through detailed descriptions of the early peace process. Would have liked more on how this govt managed the economy & relationships within the coalition. Under the Rainbow by Shane Kenny. www.gillbooks.ie/politics-cur...

In the week of Jimmy Carter's funeral, timely to remember he was the first US president to say that the the Troubles wasn't just an internal British issue but also concerned the Irish government and must be settled on the basis of respect for human rights. Clinton played a big role later on.

Excellent article by @rositaboland.bsky.social in @irishtimes.bsky.social. Don't know much about the writer Alice Munro, but this story is very troubling & unsettling.

A timely reminder from Michael McDowell in @irishtimes.bsky.social of how statist the Irish economy used to be and with poor outcomes for ordinary people.

Jimmy Carter was instrumental in getting the US involved as a voice for a peaceful and human rights based solution to the North of Ireland. He ignored British disapproval and issued this statement in 1977. A step on the road to the peace process. www.irishtimes.com/world/us/202... #jimmycarter

There is no mystery to it - many of the Western and Central European states, Germany obviously, but also France, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Czechia, Hungary etc, have the Jewish holocaust still within their collective living memory.
