Not a lot of baseball choices here...

Maybe the greatest card of all time. Mitchell's expression, the action, the dirt, the wood bordering, the blue expos jersey. Chef's kiss.

If you see this soost a title screen that is iconic to you

I am not sure any player epitomizes the late 1980s proto-Guardians as much as this guy!

Apparently there are four different pics because....Topps.

Finally, here is Luis Aguayo just because I feel like I can't include 1/2 of my favorite double play combo ever (Jeltz) without the other half.

And Dave Magadan gets the awesome 'Future Stars' designation! He is a career .444 hitter here, except they show his minor league stats. C'mon!

(aside, the late 1980s were AWESOME for Mets Future Stars (Magadan, Elster, Jeffries). They must have OWNED the 1990s!)

Oh, and I almost forgot! Yogi as an Astro! And loving it!

(The Astros almost made the World Series in 1986, they had Nolan Ryan and Mike Scott (big deal at the time) and Topps chose an assistant coach. I love the Yankees!)

And on those powder blues, they just looks SO GOOD in this set! Fake wood, powder blue, its like a 1980s basement in the Phillie suburbs!
July 9, 2025 at 12:37 AM
There are also some awesome star cards like Donnie Baseball looking awesome, Rickey, Schmidt in a great powder blue, and Tony Gwynn's card is just chef's kiss:

(Seriously, cards with Mattingly hitting are always awesome...)

As mentioned in the article there are the 'should be in the HoF rookies here:

(ok, maybe not Inky...but still. it's Inky)

MIke Laga's card has to be on the painted cap Mt. Rushmore. Like, why is he wearing pink? Was it red but the white jersey came through? What is going on here?

(BTW, has anyone ever seen Mike Scioscia and Mike Laga in the same place? Was this Scioscia's burner name?Doesn't it look like a disguise?)
July 9, 2025 at 12:37 AM
If Mitchell isn't the coolest card, how about a surfing Jack Clark? Its the top card in like 80% of sets!
July 9, 2025 at 12:37 AM
The best card in the set is Kevin Mitchell. Putting aside that he was yet another 1980s star whose career didn't quite pan out as expected, JUST LOOK AT IT!!! It is one of the best cards ever! A yelling/sliding Mitchell? Check. Blue expos jersey in background? check. Dust cloud? Triple Check!

Relief pitcher with the most fWAR for either the Boston or Milwaukee Braves (Bees, Beaneaters, etc.) is the legendary Nels Potter (who made 49 relief appearances for BSN).

Dave Parker passed away. RIP.

I remember him most as a Red and A (born in 1981). Had to learn about his awesome peak later.

He misses the chance to give a speech in Cooperstown by about 6 (8?) weeks but at least he knew he was in!

So such a cool player.

Here is another question for everyone. Who is the best pitcher with exactly a .500 career record.

Asking this because I came across Nap Rucker - 134-134, 2.42 ERA, 32.2 fWAR.

Coghlin probably wasn't the best rookie in 2009 but it wasn't a great crop. My pick would have been Hanson (I think I remember thinking this at the time as well).

It appears that today is Ricky Jordan's 60th birthday.

There is no way that is true! It wasn't that long ago that I watched him hit a HR in his first at bat!
