The change theory that does apply is that when in a hostile work environment (HR term) most people will do the bare minimum to keep attention from themselves, a phenomenon recently renamed "quiet quitting" as a way of blaming the worker for the boss being an a-hole.

In fact, this vibe is so effed that change theory doesn't really apply. This is fascism studies territory, Timothy Snyder stuff.

We're not entirely on the same page, but we're pretty close. Thanks for clarifying.

Yeah, the countries with successful bans have A. bans that include buyback and seizure measures, which our ban was not, and B. a lot less of whatever cultural feature it is that makes Americans so eager to have giant collections of weapons.

Fair enough. It does seem to me and the link I shared says this, that the ban had some effect. The since-deleted arguer asserted it was obvious that the ban did nothing. While the data is messy and politically tainted I don't think an absolute take like that is sound.

Agreed, I also think the timing feels odd, which I already said on FB.

The account arguing with me deleted their posts, so I'm reposting my source on which I base my opinion. theconversation.com/did-the-assa...
Did the assault weapons ban of 1994 bring down mass shootings? Here’s what the data tells us
Analysis of the 10 years in which the US banned sales of assault weapons shows that it correlates with a drop in mass shooting deaths – a trend that reversed as soon as the ban expired.

This is a data set with no interpretation and you need an account to identify the source. Our respective graphs show essentially the same pattern if not the same numbers. My source includes an interpretation and that interpretation concludes the ban was impactful. Where are you going with this?

The OP has a PhD. We're going to be providing citations if we're going to do this. This article, or one a lot like it, is where my opinion comes from. theconversation.com/did-the-assa...

I request you clarify, bc the assault weapons ban did matter & on the face of it, this post reads like a disinformative & reactive libertarian talking point & I'd be very surprised if you intended that. Also, this clip is not the kind of clip that deserves a WTF. I made sure to watch b4 replying.

Traffic would jump because we'd all be reading the conflicting accounts as they all tell on each other. Cuz Doug has opinions about everyone on the street and he's not afraid to share.
