Our fieldwork in Rangárvallasýsla (South Iceland) is now finished! Seven deserted farms were trenched and cored. Preliminary results suggest that c half of the sites were abandoned before 1500 whilst others were settled later. And some remained in use until the 17th century.

For #AskAnArchaeologistDay, I’m asking archaeologists (and enthusiasts) to join me in donating to help Palestinian archaeology students complete their degrees.

We owe it to our future colleagues in Gaza to support them in spite of the genocide.

This #ThrowbackThursday takes us back to the origins of capitalism.🏺

Analysis of medieval commercialisation suggests that, contrary to popular belief, economic development is not an inevitable, linear process, but a patchwork of social relationships.

It's Christmas, so of course we have to bring you a reindeer story! A rare #Viking #comb found (even more unusually) by a detectorist in East Anglia. The finder reported it to the #PortableAntiquitiesScheme, & then generously donated the find to Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service.
Just published: The Portable Antiquities Scheme & the potential of non-metallic finds: A Viking Comb from Shotley, Suffolk by Steve Ashby et al.

This is the first comb found in England to be identified as Scandinavian via biomolecular means (yes it had to be a reindeer 🦌) doi.org/10.11141/ia....
