Shrews loose their motivation for reward, which could be mistaken for cognitive impairment and run excessively, confounding the effects of the actual study about effects of brain size changes. @mpi-animalbehav.bsky.social @animaltracking.bsky.social 2/🧵

Almost all scientific research is done with lab animals. Surprisingly, there is barely any literature on how captivity may affect the results. And these effects can be profound. In shrews, remind us of depression as the paper published by @cecibaldoni.bsky.social shows doi.org/10.1098/rsos...

looking for a good scientific read? This paper is out today and shows how much energy male bats can save by living in groups. Great for buffering environmental unexpectedness! Pic by Rene J doi.org/10.1242/jeb....

Congratulations Sarah, for submitting you bachelor thesis. She fought valiant battles with giant data sets and algorithms spitting out false positives and prevailed: lesser fishing bats' morning foraging is determined by reproductive state. Also our lab culture very much revolves around cake 😇

let me introduce myself. I study bats. And shrews. And yes, there is a red thread. small size, high metabolism -> how do they deal with unpredictability in food availability. I am leaving the dark side and I‘ll be posting news from our research here. Pics for attention
